ROBBIE TWO-TIME

  • subtitle: Avery Aydelotte, Jett Schilling, Robbie McCormick, And Luke Gordon Win Big At Rip Curl GromSearch Stop In NSB

TURF: Rip Curl GromSearch Stop #3 Presented By Mophie; New Smyrna Inlet, New Smyrna Beach, FL; August 11th, 2014.

ENERGY: Clean, offshore two- to three-foot peaks came in throughout the day, with humid 90-degree temperatures and New Smyrna’s friendly spinner sharks making their presence known.

FIRST TIME AT FIGHT CLUB: Although many of the Girls 16 & Under competitors had competed at the GromSearch competitor, none of the eventual finalists had ever made it that far in the contest, proving that these the face of women’s surfing on the East Coast is changing fast.

SLIDE: As usual, New Smyrna Inlet offered up some tasty treats for the groms to get down on. Robbie McCormick had the biggest day of anyone, taking home wins in both the Boys 16 & Under and Boys 14 & Under wins for some serious cash ($500) and serious bragging rights (the last double division GromSearch winner was Kanoa Igarashi in 2012). En route to his victories, McCormick took down one of the East Coast’s hottest prospects (and the mophie Maneuver of the Event winner), South Carolina’s Luke Gordon.

Californian Jett Schilling surprised everyone in the tricky Smyrna conditions and pocketed $250 for his Boys 12 & Under victory, while also earning a spot in the Boys 14 & Under final, where he finished 4th. In Girls 16 & Under, South Florida’s Avery Aydelotte was the clear winner, scoring the highest wave of the heat with an 8.5. North Florida’s Braidyn Cunningham and Hannah Blevins finished 2nd and 3rd, respectively, while Central Florida’s Eva Woodland finished 4th and all the girls snagged well-deserved trophies, cash, and other prizes for the first time in their GromSearch histories.  Aydelotte in particular has been working hard, traveling the world, filling up her schedule with coaching seminars, and pursuing other extracurriculars that are paying serious dividends.

THE PAIN: Clearly the upset of the tournament came with McCormick’s big victories over Luke Gordon and Logan Hayes. Gordon suffered a particularly gutting blow in Boys 14 & Under, when McCormick stole victory in the dying moments by less than 0.5 points. However, some may not have seen it as surprising considering McCormick recently ventured up to the Outer Banks with Peter Mendia and Cory Lopez to shred Hurricane Bertha swell with the likes of Ben Bourgeois and Jeff Myers.

THE MAN: How about The Woman in Avery Aydelotte? While she’s always appeared on the cusp of surf-world success, her determination and “cup never full” mentality means this young Jedi apprentice may be making some big moves in future Rip Curl GromSearch competition. Although he didn’t win, Luke Gordon also didn’t go home empty handed, taking home the mophie Maneuver of the Event award and $50.

YOU DO NOT TALK ABOUT FIGHT CLUB: “I’ve been trying to train a lot more, and NSB has always been one of my favorite waves on the East Coast. I pretty much grew up surfing here. The GromSearch is fun because I surf heats with all my best friends from up and down the coast.” –Double division winner Robbie McCormick
