Upon
completion of this year's Red Bull Ice Break (see
full story on Page 64), ESM's onsite
reporter/ photog team of Dick Meseroll and
Matt Pruett stuck around Nova Scotia, heeding
Mike Nelson's infamous "Nelliecast"
that another swell was on its way to the Great White
North. They were joined by Jersey powerhouses Sam
Hammer, Frank Walsh, and Ben McBrien,
as well as LBI-based ESM contributing
writer Jon Coen, Pat "Surf Cat" Emery,
and Cambridge, MA's, Zev Gartner. The crew
enjoyed a couple priceless days of solid surf and
sight-seeing (the spots of which you couldn't extract
from them with Chinese water torture), and mingling
with some of Novi's finest blokes like Lance Moore,
Buck Williams, Nico Manos, and Morgan
Begg. A thousand thanks to our Canadian connection
for their unmatched hospitality and warmth in one
of the Eastern Seaboard's purest, most treasured seascapes.
Nor'Easter
Surf Shop owner Mark Keup informed us the
store has a new location at 376 Gannett Road, North

A
frigid easterly storm swell which dumped 18 inches
of snow on New England provided thumping three to
five-foot swell for the 37th Annual New England
Mid-Winter Surfing Championships, held at the
Narragansett Town Beach, in Narragansett, RI.
There was little doubt about just how cold it was,
as a sheet of snow blanketed the entire beach and
parking lot, right up to the high water mark. Big
winners included Eric Anderson, John Basile,
Kevin Langevin, Paul Thoren, Peter
Pan, Janice Causey, Jen McGovern,
Susan Lochiatto, Pat Redmond, Mike
Burbelo, and team Gansett Juice. All contestants
received authentic Eastern Surfing Association
ceramic coffee mugs for participating.
Speaking
of Rhode Islander McGovern, she and her photog
dad Joe stopped in to the ESM
offices in March while on vacation. The two took a
jaunt down to Key West, and returned in time to score
some fun spring peaks at the Cocoa Beach Pier--before
joining an "ESM Night Out" at the Surfin'
Turtle in Melbourne Beach with the Eastern
Surf crew.

We
just had to give major props to South Jerseyite photog Trevor
Moran for the batch of photos he sent for last issue's
Winter Photo Feature, "Boyz 'N The Hoods (...And Booties And
Gloves). Due to learning new technology and digital bug-a-boos,
poor Trev couldn't get the properly formatted CD to
us in time for our final picks, but boy, if he did we sure
would've used some of the gems he sent us like this one of
his brother, Jamie, positively blowing up in a super
freezing Jersey beachbreak. No worries, Trevor,
because late is truly better than never and we look forward
to running a lot more of this budding Garden State sharpshooter's
pics in upcoming issues of ESM.
A
couple big-name Mid-Atlantic hobos hopped aboard the

the second part to our "Superfreaks in Middle America" segue.
$100 cash goes to the surfer who nails the sickest never-before-seen
maneuver to be included in the video.
Jetty

Hawaii. He's also a rep for Quicksand.
Don't
you hate this shit? Some poor fella' in Vah Beach got his
board swiped by some creep at 60th Street on February
7th. It's a 6'0" Seasoned fish with a red and yellow
flame design on the bottom. Please E-mail linsly1@cox.net

Tarheel

a trip to Australia, where the ESA Allstar trained
with Martin Dunn.
Jesse
Hines, Matt Beacham, Will Tant, and Noah
Snyder also headed Down Under for three weeks to film
for a surfing reality show to air late this fall on Steelroots
Television. Noah's Arc creator Nic McLean,
along with Jesse Schluntz, helped direct the 17-day
shooting schedule while renting houses in Sydney and Byron
Bay. They had around-the-clock cameramen following each and
every prank and wave along the way. Tant and Beacham
then hopped a plane over to New Zealand with Aquafluence's
Matt Katsolis, where they racked up the clips for a project
of Katsolis' to be named later, and for ESM's
