Josh Clements -- Simpson

•Wicked cool! Cape Cod, MA, finally has a surf photographer. Good thing, too, because the Cape has always been a talent-dense area--with top rippers like 2005 Red Bull Ice Break Main Event competitors Josh Clements and Dillon Murphy leading a volatile pack including Eric Anderson and Matt Richards. And the digital lensman in question, Luke Simpson, is already holding some pretty solid images, like this heck-of-a-huck shot of Josh. Keep 'em coming, Luke! Hmmm... if he keeps bagging such good photos, we might even be forced to resurrect our Kingpin department, which has been in a temporary coma since 2003.

•By the time this issue's in print, it might be too late to catch the Squan Salt Water Splash, a two-day film festival that fell in the middle of the Endless Fun Summer Tour (an East Coast promotional tour put on by Robert August Surf Co. and SurfNRG's Kevin Welsh), but you can still catch the latter, which began in the Southeast and ends at Nantucket Island on July 8th. For more info, dates and times, check with your local Robert August dealer or visit www.manasquannj.com.

Utopia Optics International gets the "Harvard Smart Award" this issue for signing double-jointed aerial freakazoid and Long Beach, NY, adoptee Ryan Carlson to a two-year contract. For a glimpse at "Rarlson's" futuristic flair, visit the website of his longtime clothing sponsor, ...Lost, at www.lostenterprises.com. Or better yet, pick up a copy of Eastern Surf Magazine and NON Productions' upcoming video release, Always Right, where Ryan will blow your tiny little mind in a plethora of locales ranging from Ireland and Nova Scotia to the Northeast and California.

Sherri Fournier with the Surfrider Rhode Island Chapter is calling all waveriders to check out a news alert on www.nesurf.com. It concerns a bill put forward by Pennsylvania Republican Senator Rick Santorum. The bill proposes that buoy information, which we already pay for through our taxes, would only be made available to corporations that would then resell the information back to you--for a fee, of course! Give it a look and voice your opinion--or e-mail Sherri at Sherripf@aol.com.

Jesse Fawess, Throwing Signs for Kevin Kroushinsky -- Baker

•Babylon, NY's, Bunger Surf Shop recently expanded their shop--located at 50 East Main Street--and now boasts a separate board and surf accessories room. Stop by and check it out. •$12,000 was raised in April at the Fight 2 Walk fundraiser for New York rider Kevin Kroushinsky's spinal cord injury. Over 250 heads attended the happening at Salty Dog Tavern, hosted by Salty owners Tim Finnegan and Tom Moore. Bunger Surf Shop's Charlie Bunger even took his web cam from Gilgo Beach and set it up for the night at the bar for the fundraiser--so Kevin could watch the event online. Kev was no doubt stoked and touched by the many signs people held up in front of the cam for him to view, including one by local surf star Jesse Fawess: "I learned my cutback from watching you." You can still donate money, so call Teresa Bunger at 800-698-7873 to learn how.

•In more Salty news, those looking for a solid surf flick and an ice-cold one in Babylon, NY, should hit the Salty Dog Tavern every Thirsty Thursday--where there's plenty of drink specials and surf stars in attendance every week. Not to mention, the choice watering hole houses 15 TV's. The Salty Dog is located across the street from the Babylon Train Station. Visit www.saltydogbabylon.com for more information and directions. Tell them ESM sent you.

•New York stringers Ed "Zippy" Arikian and Barb "Babs" Baker made their annual Easter pilgrimage for food, drinks and accommodation--all provided gratis by ESM Publisher Tom Dugan (what a guy!). Along with the many exciting attractions and activities at Doogieland, Zippy and Babs also found time to pop by the Ron Jon's Easter Surfing Festival--where they mingled with the likes of Stephen Slater, Kassia Meador and fellow Long Islander "Pistol" Pete Armata, not to mention New York native and eventual Pro Longboard division winner Mike DeTemple. See you'se next year--same place, same time.

•April's Rhode Island Surfrider Chapter Earth Day Computer Recycling Drive and Beach Cleanup at Narragansett Town Beach collected over 37,000 pounds of computers and picked up over eight tons (16,000 lbs) of trash from the beach. •The New York City Department of Parks recently designated a section of Rockaway Beach, NY, as a surf access zone. A Surfrider press release recently stated, "The Surf Area Designation comes as a relief to many--prior to 2005 surfers and other beachgoers received tickets for surfing, bathing and simply walking on the beach in the Rockaways." Now, diehard waveriders and visitors alike can enjoy the alluring NYC stretch of beach--without violating the law. Bout freakin' time.

•Attention: Kevin "Doc" Grondin sighting! And he was out of his hood and booties! The New Hampshire legend made a surprise appearance on the Outer Banks in late April to the delight of many Bankers, including WRV shaper Jesse Fernandez and Steve and Julia Magliano. When it's firing, you never really know what lineup Grondin will grace. We wouldn't want it any other way--and we hope to see the "Good Doc" down South sooner rather than later. Compiled by Mike Fish

Martin "All In" Fucci -- Carey

•Heading up this month's Mid-Atlantic Blah Blahs, ESM sends our most festive congratulations to Virginia Beach, VA-based ripper Leif Lindquist, who married his beautiful longtime girlfriend Joanna Spence on May 21st in an elegant Chesapeake, VA, ceremony that hosted a slew of Outer Banks surfers including Leif's first cousin, ESM Editor Matt Pruett, ace bodyboarder Calvin Self and recent UNCW graduate Justin Fucci (Woo hoo!) Unfortunately, Justin's hot shreddah' of a little brother, Martin Fucci, couldn't be a part of the celebration, as he was off joining Chris Curry on his maiden trip to Puerto Escondido to run poker games and film for ESM's upcoming video release, Always Right.

•Speaking of Curry, we received a hot tip that Chris officially signed on with Ezekiel Clothing, and the Wrightsville Beach, NC, pro couldn't be happier with the deal. Look for some big things from this guy, folks.

•Out of Long Branch, NJ, the Surfers' Environmental Alliance (SEA) donated $500 to UNICEF's Tsunami Relief Fund to aid victims living in the most severely devastated areas of Sri Lanka, Indonesia, India and Thailand, plus another $500 to the Republic of the Maldives to help victims of extreme flooding and tidal waves. SEA also gave $500 to the Surfrider-Rincon, PR Chapter to assist in the group's ongoing campaign to preserve surfing areas and coastal natural resources. For more on what Terry's been up to, call 910-431-2037.

•Long Beach Island, NJ, standout Ben McBrien recently signed on with Zoo York as their #1 pro waverider. The urban flavor-heavy, New York-born skateboard company has been trying to break into the surf side of things for a few years now, and we can't think of anybody better for the job than our man Ben. Way to go, Zoo York, for taking notice of one of New Jersey's very best surfers. This guy throws down some serious hammers.

Sam Steed Says Yes to Nosara -- McCarthy

•Kitty Hawk, NC, surfer/ cabinet maker Glenn Steed, along with his talented sons Sam and Matt, slipped down to Costa Rica for their annual Nosara vacay this spring. The same region was also targeted by fellow Bankers Skip Haynes--father to FCS/ Gorilla Grip rep and former ESM Who Da Guy Nigel Haynes--Rick Scott, Byron Peck and Melanie Clayton. Have you gotten your Pura Vida on today?

•Washington, DC-based surfer/ filmmaker Stephen Samaniego just finished a surf film about his time in Namotu, Fiji, From Nowhere To Somewhere, and wouldn't you know it? A silent auction followed with a prize list which included surfboards, snowboards and skydiving packages. Mark your calendars, gals.

Pete Viele - Van Atta

•Budding Outer Banks shutterbug Duncan Parker relocated to Los Angeles with his new fiancé, Jennifer Paxton, this winter. And his new water housing is being manufactured as we speak, so ESM expects to see some killer shots from him in the coming months. Dunc's also been working on a feature film production while planning for his wedding in Corolla, NC, on September 10th. Best of luck, Dunc, and save us a slice of wedding cake. We'll be there.

Jersey's Mike Murphy Finds His Exit at Pipe -- Black

Green Room Boardsports General Manager Pete Viele is proud to report they've just added charismatic pro Billy Hume to their team, and also that shaper/ owner Scooter Raynor just stocked the store with a heavy inventory of boards--everything from '70s-era retro single fins to '80s beak-nosed small-wave mongrel sticks to high performance thrusters. If you got some spare time, dig their site at www.greenroomboardsports.com.

•Make sure to read the interview with "Bionic Man" Ben Bourgeois at www.transworldsurf.com. It's good shit.

•Indialantic, FL's, Bodyboard Headquarters' Luis Rivera relayed to us that they just picked up Delaware madman Joel Tice for the Toobs/ BBHQ team, as well as Jersey spongebobs Mike Simone and Pat Perkins. The Headquarters is officially back in operation after been shut down since Hurricane Season 2004. And another Jerseyite who's been rushing big Hawaii this year is Mike Murphy, plus Indian River Inlet, DE, local Bob Baldwin.

•Y'know, the crew at Surfline is so tight with their "Local Knowledge" updates, we just couldn't help snaking a few of them for our very own print rag: First off, New Jersey Movement Clothing riders Jacques Beningo and Scott Drages spent a huge chunk of their winter in Puerto Rico with fellow Heritage Surf Shop teamer Jon Barrie to shoot photos and video for Movement's new website and catalog. Apparently, the boys caught some heavy juice at Maria's and Wilderness. Check www.movement01.com a little later for more news. But for now, turn to Page 130 for a long-overdue Who Da Guy profile on Scott. Aside from that, we here at ESM (also) wish a speedy recovery to Tom's River, NJ, longboarder Colin Apanel, who broke his neck during an April day at Holyoke and is now recovering at home, stoked to be alive. And, as always, to stay plugged in with all the most up-to-date local deets on the Right Coast, visit www.surfline.com. Compiled by Matt Pruett

Double Daddy Kenny Kozack Combos the Baby Competition -- Cresitello

•How ironic is this? Quiksilver rep Kenny Kozack, one of the Hobgood twins' closest friends, and his wife Shannan just had... you guessed it, twins! Kieren and Kylie Kozack entered the world on March 21st, but what you didn't know is that there's a 90% chance they were conceived last summer at Camp Hobgood in Nicaragua, when Kenny and Shannan were visiting. Hey, you do the math! Here's a heartfelt congratulations to the entire Kozack clan.

Inland Ocean recently opened their sixth store--in Jacksonville Beach, FL's, St. John's Town Center--according to general manager Greg Smart. G'head and visit their website at www.surfinlandocean.com.

ESM Assistant Photo Editor Mark Hill nailed last issue's monumental Page One sequence of CT Taylor blasting high above a Jamaican lip during an Always Right video/ photo mission with CT, fellow Ambiguous spray-chucker Sean Tubbs, Max Doucet and Asher Nolan (stay tuned to the pages of Eastern Surf for a future story). But Mark wasn't the only guy tripping on the island's surf potential. Clever Surfboards shaper Jay Smith has the lowdown on several Jamaican righthand pointbreaks, all lying less than an hour's flight from the Florida coast! Jay urges you to contact Surf Express to book your irie surfari today.

•In other Clever news, star teamrider Pete Jagocki spent a couple months on the North Shore this spring hitting up top spots like Pipeline and Sunset, and the relentless charger broke all of his boards--one of them with his head, which earned him three staples.

McKevlin's Surf Shop's newest Lines newsletter (April/ May 2005) gave us a bunch of tasty South Carolina blahs to chew on. Firstly, the shop welcomes beautiful new shop gals and Lines contributors Kelly Dusenbury and Pam Shealy to the crew. The store is also proud to be carrying Sharp Eye Surfboards, and they've been chosen as the official local dealer of Kane Garden Surfboards out of San Diego, CA. And speaking of San Diego, ex-Folly Beachers Ian Riggs and Heidi and Chris Birch are loving their new SoCal lifestyles--Heidi working for Reef, Ian landing a job at a glider facility and Chris unclogging computers at an Indian-run casino?? And finally, ESM sends the shop our warmest wishes for a happy 40th birthday.

Jay Smith and His Friend Buggy -- Dugan

•St. Augustine, FL's, Scott Marvin just re-upped another year with Sessions, and is now getting all his boards fitted with Speeedfins from New Smyrna Beach, FL's, Jeff Beasley. •South Florida shredder Matt Oberman reported the sad passing of Brian Taylor on March 11th. Taylor was Oberman's surf mentor and one of the best waveriders to ever come out of Ft. Lauderdale. He will be greatly missed.

•During Event #6 of the Matix/ Sun Diego Pro/Am Surf Series, held April 2nd-3rd at P.B. Drive in Pacific Beach, CA, our bro from Laguna Beach, CA, Brad Burdick, edged fellow Matix rider from St. Augustine, Chris Ropero, in the Adio Pro Junior. Burdick left with $500 while Ropes copped $250.

•Deepest condolences to the friends and families of avid Florida surfers Julie Morgan and Aeneas Hernlen, who were killed on March 28th. Their ashes were spread during a memorial paddle-out ceremony at Ponce Inlet on April 3rd. They leave behind five-year-old Tia Skye, who has two funds set up for her care: Tia Skye Hernlen Donations: Bank Of America, 3809 S. Nova Road, Port Orange, FL 32129--and Gulf States Federal Credit Union, P.O. BOX 945110, Maitland, FL 32794-5110.

•After his breakthrough performance at the Globe Sebastian Inlet Pro, Jupiter, FL's, part-time Mexico resident Ryan Helm has decided to have a go at the grueling 2005 WQS in hopes of making The Show in '06. Balancing a life as a dedicated family man to his Mexican wife Paola and three-year-old son Leon with that of a traveling competitive pro is no easy task, so if you see Ryan, give the guy a pat on the back for support. As of this year, Del Mar Media-World Ocean has officially taken Ryan under their wing as a client.

•In South Carolina blahs, we recently came across some fine shots of former ESM Who Da Guy from Garden City, SC, Shawn Clark. Photogs James and Meghan Whitney caught Shawn ripping up the Grand Strand area. And from those images, it looks to us like the kid's definitely on the right track since placing 3rd to Jersey lightning rod Randy Townsend at the HIC/ K-Coast Open a couple years back. Thanks so much for the shots, James and Meghan, and we definitely look forward to seeing any more pics you might have of Eastern underground talent.

Taking Over Cal One block at a Time. Sarah Hoffert -- Mez

Jack Hoffpauir II organized Music For Hope to promote a positive message about life through music, in Indialantic, FL, on May 21st. The show benefited the National Suicide Hotline and featured The New School Dropouts, The Scoobees, Doorway 27 and Freeflow Conspiracy, and was a huge success with 100% of the money turned over to the Krisin Brooks Hope Center, a tax-exempt, nonprofit organization.

•Gulf Coast sweetheart Sarah Hoffert is one rad chick. But you probably won't see her busting too many big airs on the Right Coast this summer since she's out in California hanging with the Veeco crew, working on her contest game and all that jazz.

•Nice guy Adio rep from St. Augustine, Casey Stahr, is super excited about his North Florida riders lately, as Asher Nolan is five for five in the last pro events he's entered (See full story starting on Page 48), and ams Ross Howatt and Tyler Crawford placed in the top eight in Juniors at the No Fear / Aqua East Pro!

•Know about Urban Dwellers? No? Then go to www.urbandwellers.com right now. Don't ask anymore questions. Just do it. They're a gritty-cool company based out of Miami, FL, and they have an online interview with South Florida hellman Lyn Meyers about the now-infamous April 16th tow-at sesh at Pumphouse, what many are calling the biggest Florida tubes in history!?! You'll have to click on and judge for yourself.

Mason Sapp -- Dugan

•Speaking of contests, despite crappy surf and a meager local turnout, the inaugural Playalinda Shorepound Shootout went off nonetheless, and out-of-towners got the best of it. In fact, the Jacksonville kids took almost all the victories; in particular, Cody Thompson, who made three finals. South Jersey pro Randy Townsend also came out to show his support, as did Gulf Coaster Aaron Corn and Cocoa Beach, FL, rippers Robbie Blevins and Mason Sapp.
