21 Gun Salute at Puerto for Will Skudin -- Mez

•All the gang here at the blah-job factory send out belated best wishes to WRV and Unsound teamer/ big-wave charger/ tow-in freak Will Skudin, who turned 21 this May while in Puerto Escondido. There, "Skuds" celebrated the milestone with a full crew of Right Coast hellmen and filmers. The posse included freelance photo phenom/ diehard Yankees fan from New Hampshire, Brian Nevins, fellow New Yawkers Sean Killarney and George Geiser, Jersey's Ben "McBride" McBrien, Sam Hammer, Frank Walsh and photog Chris Pfiel, Nor-Cackalacka's Chris Curry, Jesse Hines, Noah Snyder and Carl Wallin, and North Florida Gators Asher Nolan and Will Tant. Not to mention, the festivities were documented by Mike Nelson and Mez for Eastern Surf's upcoming video Always Right. The highlight of the trip? None other than The Birthday Boy's wonderful scheme to escape the obligatory rage on turning the big "2-1." Will dodged the typical hoopla by renting a jet-ski from the 'Escon lifeguards and organizing an impromptu tow-at contest--Red Bull RB5X style--with all participants judging the winner from video footage shot by Wrightsville Beach, NC, vid kid Nate Lee, who was filming for both ESM and his own debut project, Luggage. Chris Curry took the grand prize of this issue's full-page Money Shot photo on Page 118. Happy birthday, Will, and many more to you from your pals at Eastern Surf.

•Also on hand in Puerto, shooting for his own project was New Hampshire's Joe Carter, who is butt-up and balls-deep in his first release titled Get In The Van--so stay tuned to these pages for more info on what promises to be a stellar effort from Joe C. And speaking of surf films and the hardworking and talented Mr. Carter, ESM accidentally misconstrued the facts here last issue that Joe and New Hammy surfer, filmer, graphic artist, guitar slinger, and all around good guy/ longtime friend of the mag Ralph Fatello had fully partnered up on an upcoming video project titled 1. Instead, the boys are just helping each other out as friends and fellow Hamshirites on their respective, upcoming releases--just as Eastern Surf is doing with many of our coast's top vid guys (including both Joe and Ralph) for our inaugural effort, Always Right. Sorry for any confusion, guys. And once again, stay tuned for any breaking news on the aforementioned films. Guaranteed, you'll read it here first.

Grant Washburn Gets Thrown Into the Dungeon -- Slabbert

•Bring in the summer right at New Yorker Mark Temme's website, www.guerrillaguru.com, for recent hot clips from Long Beach Island with music by local LBI band The Trans Magetti.

•This June, Connecticut native Grant Washburn once again proved himself among the world's elite chargers at the Red Bull Big Wave Africa 2005, held at Dungeons in South Africa. Grant bagged his second victory there and an enormous 20-foot bomb, which landed him R15,000 and the Sensi Threads Biggest Wave title. For more info on the Red Bull BWA 2005 and its previous six editions, visit the comprehensive website at www.redbullbwa.com.

•Portsmouth, NH's, Skye Nacel has been busy repping for Erino Clothing, owned by Massachusetts surfer Chris Gillis, and sold in shops like Liquid Dreams, Zapstix, Luna Chics, Black and Blues and Walk the Cape. Skye's also been writing and shooting for a few rags, including N'East Magazine and Wire Magazine. Not to mention, he's started filming segments as the core sports guy for the new TV show on WNDS called Dan Egan's Wild World of Summer--which airs every Thursday night at 7:30 pm... And (gasp!) Skye hosts a local action sports radio show in Portsmouth every Tuesday from 1:00-3:00 pm called Perpetualmocean. Visit www.perpetualmocean.com for deets on that. Fitting talk show title for you, Skye--and way to keep things moving.

•You know summer is officially here when the Surfrider Foundation/ Blue Water Task Force ocean water testers are prowling the Rhode Island coastline. This marks the fourth year that a dedicated group of volunteers--including surfers from the University of Rhode Island Oceanography Department, Save The Bay, Surfrider Foundation and the Eastern Surfing Association--have been enlisted to collect specimens from 13 of the most popular surfing breaks in the Ocean State. For more deets on the Blue Water Task Force, go to www.surfrider.org/programs.

GSP Surf Cinema debuted the topnotch new flick, Unsalted: A Great Lakes Experience, at select Southeastern venues in June. Word on the street is the film is a must-see. But don't take the street's word for it--turn to Page 126 for an in-depth Cinematheque report on the flick. Also, visit www.globalsportsproject.com for additional information.

•In late spring, the 6th Annual New England Longboard Classic Championships scored fun surf at Nantasket Beach in Hull, MA. Ideal conditions drew the biggest spectator crowd in the annual event's history--not to mention 143 eager competitors. Big winners included brothers Dan and Steve Hassett, Karen DeMattio, Kate Egan, Peter Pan, Eric Webber, Nora Vasconcellos and John Ryan. More than $2000 in merchandise and prizes were awarded to the top four finalists in each of the 10 divisions. After the comp, everyone flocked across the street to the local favorite, The Red Parrot, for food and drink.

•New Yorker Mike von Wahlde let us know that on May 26th a silent auction and art show benefited Boarding For Breast Cancer at the Milk Gallery, 40 West 15th Street at 10th Ave in Manhattan. Participating artists included Tony Alva, Steve Olsen, Stacy Peralta, Kevin Ancell, Peter Beard, Lance Mountain, Barry McGee, Michael Halsband and a slew of others--all riders of the concrete wave or influenced by the aesthetic. Over 90 original works were available for purchase with the proceeds going to B4BC. Check out Boarding For Breast Cancer's website at http://b4bc.org. The event also served as the kickoff for a week of old school, surf-inspired longboard skateboarding--the annual Style Sessions. For more on that concrete mayhem, e-mail Mike at mike_v@objectsarenouns.com.

•According to longtime Long Island source Bruce Bailey, big bro Java Bailey and his band Supercargoman held a slammin' CD release party on June 25th at the Vail Levitt Theater. Other bands that played were Mad Elephant and Stiltz, who actually did a music video shoot that night at the event. Keep your ears open for the new Supercargoman disc, as it's sure to be a pre-surf pump-up essential. And watch for ESM's Always Right video where Jav scores one of the sickest Northeast clips with a super-deep Esconlido tube.

•This spring--with the help of Maine Surfrider area chair Peter Slovinsky and Dubious Honor Productions' Ben Keller--Hammersurf introduced the first New England amateur boardsports film contest and festival, Proven, with a portion of proceeds to benefit the area's Surfrider chapter. The film fest was open to movie makers of all ages in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The contest is set to culminate on Sunday, August 21st in Portland, ME--when parts of each of the 10 finalists' films will be shown, as well as the Grand Prize winner's in its entirety. For more on Proven, visit www.hammersurf.com or e-mail Keller at bkeller@maine.rr.com.

•In historical access news--through the dedicated work of the NYC Surfrider Chapter, the New York Department of Parks and Recreation and numerous other local politicians and authorities--the first designated surf beach in Rockaway Beach, NY, debuts this summer at Beach 88th to the Beach 90th Street Boardwalk. The process of securing the access took approximately three years--while the necessary code and law changes were enacted at the state and local level--and it provides a great model of what happens when community and government work together. Good on ya, folks.

•Lastly, flying under Eastern Canadian radar in early June, ESM cofounder Dick Meseroll and navigator first-class Tonya Wade spent a week of R&R--rest and recon--exploring and mapping potential somewhere above the 45th Parallel. When asked by your humble blah columnist for particulars, a tightlipped Mez tersely replied: "I ain't saying moose crap." Which to us says plenty, eh? Compiled by Mike Fish

•Ladies and gentlemen, please raise your glasses to Bruce "Snake" Gabrielson of Chesapeake Beach, MD, who was inducted as a lifetime honorary member into the Huntington Beach Longboard Crew during an April 13th ceremony attended by several HB legends like Josh Mohr, as well as Peter Townend. Following the induction, Bruce gave a presentation on the history of Huntington Beach surfing, going back to the first exhibition and pier dedication by George Freeth. Bruce also recently resurrected his company, Wave Trek Surfboards, on the East Coast with Emile Monette. Check their website, www.wavetreksurf.com, for further info.

ESM Assignment Writer Noah Garrett's column "All That's Surf" is now in syndication in several newspapers throughout northeastern North Carolina, as the inland papers have expressed an interest in surfing lately. Also, Noah's new company, Red Pearl Productions, LLC., will bring Joan Jett & The Blackhearts and The Smithereens to Roanoke Island Festival Park on August 13th for Rock for Relief, with all proceeds going to hurricane relief via local rotary clubs. Tickets are available for $30 online at www.redpearlproductions.com.

•Tinseltown beauties Paris Hilton and Nicole Ritchie somehow wound up staying at the home of Garden State ESA Allstar Ben Graeff for the filming of an episode of The Simple Life. Apparently, Graeff was a little less-than-impressed by the superstars' visit, and the whole televised production in general. I mean, it's not like he had Lisa Andersen in his pad or anyone like that. Be sure to check out the current issue of Surfing Magazine (August 2005) for a revealing photo of Graeff and Hilton, plus further details on their encounter. Hey, simplify this!

Justin Fulford -- Whitney

•Poor widdle Kill Devil Hills, NC, Volcom rider Martin Fucci's first big photo/ video trip to Puerto Escondido ended in disasster this spring after he was drilled by what he called "a 20,000-pound lip, splitting my ass in half and breaking my chest." Never one to let his misfortune bring others down, Martin spent the rest of his trip running the midday-to-all-night poker games and keeping everyone in stitches with his classic freestyle musings.

•We caught word on Surfline, www.surfline.com, that Sandbridge, VA's (that's the other Vah Beach for those of you who don't know) only surf shop, Surf & Adventure Co., has a new team that's ready to make some noise in local ESA competitions: Tyler Balak, Josh Buster, Brett Carey, Nathan Davis, Reid Ganther, Nick and Ryan Johnson, Sean Millard, Justin Rienhart, Dylan and Ethan Rogers, Mike and Ryan Waldren, and Mike Weidman. They even have Bryan Brough and Cory Grandsfield signed up as team photographers, so expect to see more Pungo publicity.

•Former ESM Who Da Guy and West Surfing rep Jason Forrest reported that longtime ace boardbuilder Ted Kearns just launched his website at www.tkshapes.com, and you'd be a real moron not to check it out. It's that tight. Along with specs of his best designs, Ted's site also features factory information, a dealers list and profiles of TK Shapes teamriders like Josh Saunders and Dana Quinn--who judging by these shots might join Jason on the prestigious ESM Who Da Guy list any day now. Forrest is also now repping Hoven Eyewear and Ammon Watches in Virginia and the Carolinas. Call 252-573-9628, or e-mail livelife810@hotmail.com for more on those products.

•Virginia Beach, VA-based Reef rep Brad Beach passed the buzz along about the Planet Reef/ Sweetwater Pro/Am Surf Fest, hosted by wblivesurf.com, which will hit the surf-loony town of Wrightsville Beach, NC, on July 23rd-24th, and it looks to be one of the coolest things going on all summer--a $10,000 pro purse, prizes for all amateur finalists, a tow-at airshow competition... even a Miss Reef Search at Kefi's! Rob Machado and Jeremy Saukel will make their way up to the 'Ville to join local hero Ben Bourgeois, as well as the Planet Reef Artists and the lovely Reef Girls, to thoroughly stoke out all in attendance. Entry forms are available online at www.wblivesurf.com, or call Brad at 757-437-4321. Look for a full Pro-Life report on the Planet Reef Pro/Am Surf Fest in next issue of Eastern Surf.

Mark Newton's Law: Rip It! -- Wright

•Hats off to former transplanted Chesapeake, VA, surfer-turned-recent University of Hawaii graduate Brian "BZ" Zongolowicz, who finally nabbed his teaching degree. BZ rewarded himself for all those years of academic diligence with a trip to El Salvador, where he's currently exploring the country's plethora of epic points with his fellow "Chesafreaks." Here's hoping they score it all-time, like our Always Right crew did last fall.

•At the Matix/ SunDiego Pro/Am Surf Series' eighth and final event, held over Memorial Day weekend at Fletcher Cove in Solana Beach, CA, New Jersey icon Dean Randazzo bagged $500 for a commendable 3rd-place finish. A huge congratulatory hoagie for him.

•It was a close call for Billabong rider Raven Lundy, who while cruising down to the VB Oceanfront this June had a 9 mm handgun pulled on him at the 17th Street/ Birdneck Road intersection. He escaped unscathed, but two hours later that same day, at a nearby Jr. Market, Lee Collins--the son of Hotline Surfboards' Gurney and Cammi Collins--had a gat pulled on him! Escaping VB's increasingly dangerous urban setting is becoming more and more of a common sentiment among many residents these days, and all Raven could say was, "I guess you see what you're missing out on. Man, I gotta get outta here."

•Wrightsville Beach, NC, wave junkies Grey Vick and Eric Dranginis started a surf camp this summer called Stone Street Surf Camp. You can visit their website at www.stonestreetsurfcamp.com or call 910-620-3567 for more on their deal.

•In Southern North Carolina blahs, Holden Beach, NC, Ambiguous rider Justin Fulford is now helping with Cane Faircloth's marketing company, Mid-Atlantic Marketing Machine (MAMM), and he also landed a sweet job with Rockstar Energy Drink handling marketing and promotions from Southeast Florida to Virginia. Fulford's currently on tour in a loaded RV and ready to blow up his territory. Anyone wishing to spice up an event with Rockstar can call him at 910-279-5059. As for Faircloth, he just picked up repping duties for Gravis Footwear for the Mid-Atlantic region.

Chris Corcoran and associates just updated their killer website, VBsurfphotos (which we plugged a few issues back) and it's stacked with new images, video clips and even a link to little ol' us here at ESM. Visit www.vbsurfphotos.com today.

•And last but not least (except for having the least hair), prized ESM Assignment Writer Timmy Donnelly has been way busy this summer. His three-part series for Relix Magazine, "Behind the Scenes at Bonnaroo" turned Donnelly into the "unofficial, official journalist" for the festival. Timmy D's New Jersey Monthly feature on Sam Hammer and Frank Walsh is also out now, as is his piece on Puerto Rico for The Surfer's Path, where he teamed up with photog Steve Fitzpatrick for the 12-page feature. 7th on the WQS and Holding Strong, Gabe Kling -- C. Wilson

•Blazing through his best competitive year ever and currently holding down the #7 spot on the WQS, St. Augustine, FL's, Gabe Kling has our full attention as he fights to make the 2006 WCT. And despite all the globetrotting, Gabe still made time to surf in a contest put on by his clothing sponsor, Matix--winning the Pro/Am division of the Matix/ SunDiego Pro/Am Surf Series' seventh event, held April 30th-May 1st at Ocean Beach Pier in San Diego, CA. Gaber grabbed a cool $1500 for his troubles. Fellow 'QS warrior Dean Randazzo placed equal-5th in that same final while Puerto Rican terror Brian Toth pocketed $500 for 2nd-place in the Adio Pro Junior. Outstanding job, men!

•Ever heard of "slingboarding?" No? Well, it's an innovative new sport conjured up in Daytona Beach, FL, by Nick Santos that's starting to attract action sports enthusiasts for its training benefits as a stand-alone activity. Production specialist Alexander Tietz informed us that in addition to other developments, the Slingboard Sports crew has an ongoing video in production which documents and chronicles slingboarding. To get a better idea, visit www.slingboards.com.

ESM sends heartfelt condolences to the friends and family of avid surfer/ shrimper Happy Hendriks, who died tragically while out at sea this spring. Happy leaves behind his beloved wife Patricia, beautiful daughter Laine, and his son, best friend and surfing buddy Henry. Loved ones gathered at Pawleys Island Pier, SC, to celebrate Happy's life with a memorial paddle-out.

•We goofed! On Page 62 of our May 2005 issue (Vol.14, #104), in our coverage of the 2005 NSSA East Coast Championships, we misidentified the stylish longboarder banging that floater as Explorer and Open Longboard champ Justin Quintal. In reality, it was Melbourne Beach, FL, shredder Billy Compton, who actually placed 5th in the Explorer Longboard division. Really, Billy... we feel silly!

•The perpetually irie local guide for ESM's trip to Jamaica this spring (See Page 66 for Mark Hill's story on that adventure), Billy "Mystic," sadly reported that Jamaica surfer Lewis Brandolini died in a drowning accident at Lighthouse shortly after Hill's mission came to a close. Lewis will be mourned by many.

The Groove Tube has undergone a major remodeling treatment this June--with new flooring, showcases, paint, lighting, dressing rooms, bathroom, and heaps of fresh gear with more arriving every day. A big shout-out to the folks who worked long and hard to make it happen: Mike Lake, Mike Watts, Brian French, John Perez and Matt Price, to name a few. The Groove Tube crew celebrated with a hugely successful "Done Remodeling And It's Memorial Day Weekend Sale." In other shop haps, on Saturday, June 4th, they hosted their first-ever Surfboard Fin Clinic, where representatives from FCS and Future Fins, along with shaping guru Rich Price and local pro longboarder/ Groove Tube teamrider Mikey DeTemple showed up to discuss skeg science.

ESM Senior Photographer Steve Fitzpatrick sent word from Puerto Rico that the twelfth protest paddle put together by Water Keepers Alliance and the Surfrider Foundation against irresponsible coastal development took place on June 1st, with a Water Keepers benefit following in Rio Grande. Hosting the event was Robert Kennedy, Jr., Benicio del Toro, Kevin Costner, Chevy Chase and Owen Wilson, among others. Fox was smart to take in longtime surf industry biggie Geoff Armstrong as the company's new East Coast surf marketing manager to be based out of New Smyrna Beach, FL. A former top competitor in the ESA, NSSA and ASP-East, Geoff then spent four years as Ezekiel Clothing's surf marketing manager. He also has a motocross background, so him and Fox were a natural match.

•South Carolina-born surf artist Drew Brophy led a group of celebrated artists in the Sea Monster Ball on June 10th, "an interactive art show by the sea." Also joining Drew were past ESM Surf Art Issue contributors such as Phil Roberts and John Warren. As a bonus, special performances were put on by Rip Curl's own international superstar, Brian Toth, and friends Tommy Bursian and Josie Graves--who headlined an explosive GromSearch Expression Session. Bursian warmed things up with a 180 frontside air--but Toth took things to the skies with a disgusting, boned-out backside boost, bringing home the $100 1st-place prize.

Thaddeus Cranston from Evrec Productions has been recording Dave Settgast's band, The New School Dropouts, with Chris "DJ Emprov" Pariso as engineer, and Thaddeus claims it's one of the tightest projects they've churned out in a long time.
