Lawrencetown Beach, Nova Scotia -- Mooseknuckle

•It looks like the Empire State--home of the 2005 American League East Champion New York Yankees--has another talent franchise on the rise who will hopefully turn into a perennial winner ala the Bombers, as 15-year-old TJ Gumiela won the coveted, and extremely stacked, Boys division at the 2005 ESA Championships in Hatteras. And according to top East Coast lensman and Long Island native Mike Nelson, the Long Beach grom is on fire and could be the next big thing to hail from New Yawk since Rick Rasmussen. Yeah, that's a mighty big claim, but we at ESM say it's long overdue and wish the kid the best of luck. We'll be watching.

•Great Lakes informer Magilla Schaus let us know the Wyldewood Surf Club, the Bridge Crew Surf Club and the ESA conducted a beach cleanup in Hamilton, Ontario on Saturday, September 10th. Local surfers from Saint Catharine's to Toronto were joined by U.S. riders from Honolulu, HI, and Buffalo, NY, as part of the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup. For more information, visit www.vanaqua.org/cleanup or call toll free at 877-427-2422.

•The ESM staff was stoked to finally meet New Hampshire-based shooter Nick Lavecchia in person at the September Surf Expo in Orlando, FL. Nick's outstanding lenswork graced the pages of the 2005 ESM Surf Art Feature (Vol.14, #104), encompassing a variety of contemplative action and lifestyles. Nick recently updated his website, including a news page--as well as transmissions from home and on the road. Give it a browse when you get a chance at www.nicklavecchia.com.

•Kudos to Surfrider Executive Director and Long Island, NY, native Chris Evans, who received the award for "2005 Environmentalist of the Year" at the 2005 Waterman's Ball, held in Dana Point, CA.

Joe Humenik is now the New York/ New England rep for West Surfing. Those with inquiries can contact Joe at 732-600-4673 or j_humenik@yahoo.com. Also, congrats to Joe and Suzanne Schureman, who got married on June 2nd in Fiji. On the way to the South Pacific, Humenik enjoyed the opportunity to meet Laird Hamilton, who was on the same flight from LAX to Nadi. Joe and Suzanne toasted a few early-morning pints in the airport bar with Hamilton, who was chasing a big swell, solo (go figure).

Chris Evans -- Mez

Freestyle USA named a team captain and added six new riders to its Southern New England All Star Team. The new squad includes Captain Marc Angelillo of Orleans, MA, and rippers Katy Weeks, Rachel Finn, Eric Anderson, John Basile, Drew Simmons and Dan Woodruff.

•Long Island shooter Tommy Colla of Snapwater Surf Intelligence recently pointed us toward his freshly updated website, www.snapwater.com. Give it a click for some stellar snaps of the inviting Northeastern waters.

•OK, we recently received the following scrambled e-mail from Newport, RI's, legendary Sid Abruzzi: "Broke a rib doing a peewee dance on a bar--actually it was an Italian Godzilla dance. Back on feet now... skate bowl + roadwork + no surf + hurt for Irene + Warped Tour = a real jackass. Good job, mate." Any questions?

•Recently, Long Island artist Colette Schiavone shared some of her lucid and engaging artwork with us. Schiavone works mostly with acrylic and creates realistic waveriding scenes. Go to http://homepage.mac.com/cschiavone/PhotoAlbum2.html and have a look.

•The Rip Curl Novia Scotia Cup hosted Canada's top riders on September 3rd-4th at Lawrencetown Beach in Lawrencetown, Nova Scotia. The competition included riders of all ages and divisions for men, women and grommets. And this year's Grand Prize winner walked away with an adventure vacation package courtesy of GAP Adventures, one of the event's premier sponsors. However, the prizes didn't stop there because other sponsorship partners including Spy Optic, DaKine, Molson, Universal Music, Otherworld Surfboards and, of course, Rip Curl made sure every contestant walked away with tons of gear. Visit www.ripcurl.com for event highlights and final results.

Jack Johnson ain't got no hangups -- Clinch

•Keep an eye out for ESM Senior Photographer and ace shooter Grant Myrdal's new exhibit, Bluespace: Wind, Wave and Water at Belenky Gallery at 151 Wooster Street, Soho, New York City from September 15th through December. Grant also participated in Surfing Artists International's Art of Surfing Festival in Ocean City, NJ, at the Ocean City Music Pier--a one-of-a-kind fest for waveriding artisans of all walks. E-mail info@surfingartists.com for more details on that.

The Eastern Surfing Association ran two consecutive contests on Labor Day weekend in New England. The ESA Labor Day Beach Games Championships took place at the Narragansett Town Beach on Saturday, and the Cape Cod Surfing Championships were run on Sunday. Both events scored solid helpings of fun fall peaks, and standouts included Carly Bennett, Matt Richards, Katie Imswiler, Shaye Cavanaugh, Luke Ryan, Nora Vasconcellos, Pete Pan and the Gansett Juice Surf Team.

•Northeastern scribe Kaitlyn Cronin let us know that over 25 members of Big Brothers of Massachusetts Bay from Boston, Somerville, Lynn, Salem and other surrounding communities learned to ride the waves courtesy of the STOKE Project, Brickhouse Surf, Skate and Snow and the Surfrider Foundation this August. Owners Mark Driscoll and Jamie Hosker were on hand to provide surfboards and instruction. "I can't think of a quicker connection between a young child and the environment than surfing," Hosker said. For more information, visit www.brickhouseboards.com.

The Girl Scouts of Rhode Island 3rd Annual Adventure Surf Camp took place towards the end of the summer over a three week period--at Narragansett Town Beach and Scarborough State Beach. A few of the participating scouts were Norma Ross, Rachel Beshansky, Aubrey Gauthier and Rachel Bethinks.

•Congrats to Ohio University Surf Club's former president Jay Hill and vice prez Kyle Stock who graduated and are now both living on the wave-rich Outer Banks of North Carolina. Hill and Stock are stoked that the club was passed down to a crew of enthusiastic riders who'll no doubt keep the scene thriving in the Midwest. And the boys are even more excited by the prospect of having the good ol' Atlantic as a full-time neighbor. "I will FOREVER have the sea as a neighbor!" Kyle wrote in an e-mail. •Looking for a few tantalizing New England hurricane pics online? Check out Rhode Island photog Alexander Nesbitt's shots of macking tow-in's off Little Compton and Tuckerman's at www.nesbittphoto.com/ri_bigwaves.

•In September, West Wareham, MA's, BIC Surf announced that they'd be handling their own distribution, with the goal of bringing all the BIC Sport products under a single, effective distribution. Chris Decerbo was also promoted to North American Director of Sales and will work closely with Pan. To find out more about the transition and BIC Surf, e-mail info@bicsportna.com.

Keith Davidson -- Dugan

•If you can't get the band back together, start a new one. New Hammy's Ralph "Vince" Fatello just put together a blues/ rock trio tentatively called The Ralph Fatello Experience--which will jam occasional Hendrix and Stevie Ray tunes, as well as Ralph's own charged originals. How does he describe their sound? "Well, it's a guitar-heavy, 'pin your ears to the wall, nobody talks when I play my guitar', band," said Fatello. The Ralph Fatello Experience features Bill "Stick" Trafidlo on bass guitar and Peter "Salt" Ireland on drums. So have you ever been experienced? Not like this, you haven't.

•Matt Rivers, owner of Pump House Surf Shop in Cape Cod, received a visit from musician Jack Johnson this fall. ESM Assignment Writer Tim Donnelly dialed Jack into Pump House while in the Cape area. Rivers said he expected Johnson to show up in a flashy car or to have a rock star vibe. "So when he showed up with his wife, kid, and parents in a Dodge minivan--he caught me off guard," Rivers said. "He's such a nice, mellow guy. No hang-ups." The surf was small, but Johnson and his fam borrowed a few longboards and headed to Coast Guard Beach for a soul session. Johnson also took Rivers and his girlfriend Jamie out to dinner at Cook's Seafood. "They bought a ton of our gear and wouldn't take any discounts at all," Rivers added. "So they'll be representing Pump House in Hawaii."

•Many thanks go out to New Yawk native and longtime bud of ESM Publisher Tom Dugan, Keith Davidson, for his fine hospitality--and the amazing cuisine Italiano he served up to Doogs and partner Dick Meseroll at his newly opened Newport Beach, CA, restaurant, Mama D's. Located in downtown Newp's, near the harbor, Keith's impeccable bistro provides the real deal, homestyle Italian eats that are as good as it gets. So do yourself, and your taste buds, a favor and go mangia at Mama's. Compiled by Mike Fish

•Oh, gross! Apparently, Digital Wunderland brain Joe Cheshire, the maker of such vids as Global, Alluvium and The Dirty South, is hard at work once again on his new project, The Dirty South 2. Well, "hard at work" probably isn't the most appropriate of terms, seeing as we keep running across more and more pics of Joe himself ripping for the camera, thanks to ESM's newest ultra-talented water photog from the Wrightsville Beach, NC, area, Kenny Onufrock. In other words, Frock's blowing up.

•Speaking of blowing up, Shane Beschen's explosive new company, Monument Clothing, revamped their website with cool team profiles on Eastside riders like Shannon "Hopper" Eichstaedt, Carlos Cabrero, Andrew Meyer and Jason Reagan. Give it a look-see today at www.monumentclothing.com.

•New Jersey shooter Jack Ryan threw his bodyboarding brethren a bone this September, snapping all the pics for the first-ever $12,000 Jenkinson's Pro, what many reliable sources are calling "the best bodyboard event in U.S. mainland history." IBA World Tour rider Jason Bitzer orchestrated the whole contest. Dig Ryan's pics, video clips and more at www.jenkspro.com, a drop(knee) dead gorgeous website.

•It seems unlikely that a university located in the middle of a landlocked state would find much support for a growing surf club, but John Ravert, founder and president of the Penn State Surf Club, reported that the idea spread like wild fire and they're seeing more and more members signing up every day. Stay tuned to the pages of ESM for updated reports on PSUSC activities.

Eastern Surf pleads for everyone in the Right Coast surf community to say a prayer for Sweetwater Surf Shop manager Tony Butler, whose mother was recently diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer. We're here for you, Tony.

•One of last issue's Who Da Guys and our favorite death metal devotee, Andrew "Earth Pig" Meyer, is happy as a clam to report that his local haps column, Meyer's Monthly Manifesto, is back up and running on the new and improved WRV website, www.waveridingvehicles.com. Log on to see what's been bugging him lately.

Tony Butler -- Struntz/ Surfing

Volcom sales rep Shawn Ollice recently brought longtime Outer Banks coolboarders Dane Ostlund and Britton Ricketts on the Stone program as subreps--a Shitpile milestone of monstrous proportions. "Danger" and "Rick" as industry guys (!!!), who would'a thunk it?

•Our most heartfelt condolences go out to the friends and family of longtime ESA-Southern North Carolina District fixture Ed Manuele, who died tragically this summer in a freakish, heat-related accident. Over 30 people attended a paddle-out ceremony on Saturday, September 10th at Ed's favorite break on the southside of Crystal Pier. He will always be remembered as a great surfer and a friend to many.

•Happier New Hanover County blahs found Anarchy sub-rep Mitch Baker picking up three new Tarheel teamers: Topsail Island's Mike Beech, Wrightsville Beach's Richard Gilligan and Emerald Isle's Justin Schub. Mitch was also stoked out of his mind to see himself in Kevin Welsh's new video, NRG Crisis, pigdogging a Crystal Coast macker.

•In Delaware deets, professional skateboard sensations Tony Hawk and Bam Margera made a visit to Eleuthera, Bahamas in August to surprise their trainer, Captain "Z" who captains a charter fishing boat in the area. Hawk and Bam even stayed at ESM advertiser Harry Wilson's Cove House. They were skunked on the fishing, but made up for the lack of bites with some fun surf courtesy of Hurricane Katrina before she turned into such a devastating storm. If you wish to check out the fishing or some of the island chain's amazing setups, give Harry a call at 302-227-4011 and book a truly user-friendly tropical getaway.

•In a surprise departure from their usual autumn schedule (hanging out at home on the Outer Banks waiting for tropical punch), Noah Snyder and Jesse Hines vanished on a mid-September trip to Portugal.

•And while we're talking about Jesse Hines, according to Meghan Whitney, Hines and Noah's Arc director Nic McLean were recently spotted in Pawley's Island, SC, showing the film. They even graced Surf The Earth Surf Shop with an autograph session.

•Congratulations to ace Garden State-based photog Ryan Miller, who is set to marry sweetie Cristen Seymour on October 25th after getting engaged at Australia's Superbank. Eastern Surf wishes the two all our best for a long and happy life together.

Dane Ostlund -- Bullschtein

•The Maryland State Surfing Championships scored remarkable, record-high waves for their Ocean City, MD, contest this August thanks to Tropical Storm Irene. When all was said and done, Chris Vaxmonsky, Carly Linthicum, Jake Buchler and Wyatt Harrison were deemed champs in the Open divisions. For complete results, turn to Page 107. As an added treat, Damien Hobgood and Karina Petroni showed up to put on a show for competitors and fans.

•Word has it that Red Dogs/ Rusty Open director Shawn O'Donnell recently acquired a shaping machine, making him one of the few guys on the East Coast with the technology. Stay tuned for developments. And make sure you pick up next ish of Eastern Surf for Josh Hunter's coverage of this year's contest.

•On Saturday, August 20th, close to 150 youngsters ages 8-15 from Asbury Park and the surrounding areas participated in the free, day-long Redsand/ Surfrider Groms Gone Environ-Mental Surf Camp at 8th Avenue, where they learned to ride from volunteers like Soupbowl kingpin Kenny Mayers. Organized by the Surfrider-Jersey Shore Chapter, the event concluded Redsand and Surfrider's six-stop series, the theme of which echoed the foundation's clean beach/ ocean educational focus, as the children received pointers on beach safety and stewardship. Visit www.surfrider.org for more details.

17th Street Surf Shop-KDH manager Ryan Kingsbury has been out and about shooting surf action from the water lately and he's getting damn serious about it. In fact, his buddy Chris Bray sent in this photo of Ryan cruising the beach with all the latest, state-of-the-art equipment needed to stay afloat during heavier swells. Look for more of Kingsbury's shots to pop up on his site, www.surfkdh.com.

•And while we're on the subject of SurfKDH.com, the website was brought on as an official sponsor of the WRV Outer Banks Pro.

•Out of Monmouth County, NJ, Surfers' Environmental Alliance (SEA) issued a Request for Proposals to firms around the world for the design of an artificial wave-producing reef near Seven Presidents Park, North Long Branch. The $40,000 project is supported by New Jersey's highest officials right on up to Governor Codey. Go to www.seasurfer.org for further info.

Ben Pratt has No Idea what's going on -- Dugan

•Congrats to Inlet Cult founder and Jenks local Adam Holloway and the lovely Abbey Dickson, who were married on September 10th before taking off on a romantic Caribbean honeymoon.

•Just what Dare County needed--another skatepark! The Corolla Light Town Center Skatepark, to be exact. Built and managed by Ocean Atlantic Rentals (who were established on the Outer Banks back in 1979), CLTCS features all concrete construction, dual bowls and quarter-pipes. It's over 5000 square feet and also includes banks, a street course, grind bars and vertical drop-ins.

•LBI, NJ, pro Ben McBrien just received some new Eastside company on the Zoo York squad, as they just picked up relocated Frisco, NC, charger Will Skudin. Like Sal Rosenberg says, "Zoo everybody!"

•And ending this installment of the Blah Blahs on a high note, literally, No Idea Records just fucking rules. Being the baddest and most popular indie label in the country, it was an honor and a blessing for an organization of their stature to grant ESM rights to use their whole library in our video, Always Right. Expedited by No Idea's Tony Winebender and the ultra charismatic Virginia Beach, VA, dirtrocker and ESM Assignment Writer Ben Pratt, we were given access to such high-profile acts as Hot Water Music, Against Me! and Whiskey & Co., as well as other sure-to-be-sensational groups like The Beat Buttons, Planes Mistaken For Stars and Argentina. If you know what's good for you, visit www.noidearecords.com and check these musicians out. Or better yet, carry your lilly-white ass to The Fest 4, going off in Gainesville, FL, November 18th-20th. It will once again be a multiple-venue festival with over 100 bands signed on. Three-day passes get you into all the shows for the whole weekend, $35 in advance and $45 the weekend of. Jody Davis -- J. Wilson

ESM Senior Photographer Jimmy Wilson just completed a summertime internship with Transworld Surf, returning to his beloved hometown of St. Augustine, FL, just in time to surprise best buddy Zander Morton at the pro's 21st birthday party. The bash serviced some of North Florida's hottest rippers until the brutes in blue busted it up at midnight. Those leaving unscathed included Zander, Jonny Barclay, Asher and Apryle Nolan, Ross Howatt, Chris Ropero and Jody Davis.

•At that same party, Jody Davis let ESM in on a little faux pas on our part: the full-page shot we ran in our Contents page of our August issue (Vol.14, #106) wasn't actually Jody, but Mikey Bruneau. So sorry about that, Jody. Mislabeled slides are a sad, yet fairly uncommon occurrence in the surf pub biz. Luckily, Jody got some love in the way of a double-page spread in the newest ish of Transworld Surf.

•In more tragic news from the nation's oldest city, St. Augustine wahine and former ESA Easterns Women's champ J. Lee Driskell lost her mother, Carol Driskell, on August 22nd. Friends and family celebrated Carol's life with a paddle-out ceremony at 3rd Street on Saturday, September 3rd at 10:00 am. ESM's most heartfelt sympathies go out to the Driskell family.

•"My reign of power is finally over," reported native Texan Jon "Death Weasel" Steele. "SG Magazine no longer exists and neither does my job!" However, the defunct Primedia girls pub's Photo Editor assures all that the team is working feverishly to return all submitted images to their rightful owners. No soldiers will be left behind! Best of luck in all your future endeavors, Jon, and a fine job you've done over the past few years.

•OK, Central Florida, Hurricane Ophelia's week-long stretch of epic swell was proof that we've officially exited the summertime doldrums for the year. That means for all you hellraising types, it's time to give the raging a rest so you can be on it early as the sweet season carries on. Just stay home, rent a movie, grab a pizza... and what better way to do all that than with Hollywood Nights Video's new deal. The longtime Driftwood Plaza store recently began construction on a kitchen area designed to make the most famous New York-style pizza in Brevard County, Bizzarro's, and they'll soon be delivering pies along with movie rentals right to your door! Located at 3830 Highway A1A in the Publix Shopping Center in Melbourne Beach, Hollywood Nights' "Pizza And A Movie" delivery service will reach from Fifth Avenue, Indialantic, to Floridana Beach. Call 674-5955 for more details.

•As part of their two-year anniversary celebration this October, Miami, FL's, Jah Surf hosted a sneak preview of the upcoming film from Wilder Films, A Diary Of A Surfer (Under The Radar). Click on www.jahsurf.com for more information.

•More South Florida buzz found the Island Water Sports crew returning from their annual Costa Rica trip, where they reportedly scored everything from double-overhead Terraza to perfect, head-high Playa Grande. They wish to thank John Logan at the Playa Grande Inn for the hospitality. IWS also just became heavy one team member, with Alex "Angry Grom" Walker joining up.

•Melbourne Beach, FL, wahine Jasset Umbel, age 11, has been seen tearing up Ocean Avenue lately. Be on the lookout for her as she storms the Brevard contest scene this fall.

East Coast Surfing Legends Hall of Famer Pete Dooley has a new DVD out, accumulated from Jerry Law's classic '70s footage and you just gotta see it. Dig a preview of It Was Better Back Then at www.naturalart.com.

•Talking about Pete Dooley, he wrote an interesting Historical Perspective column in the August 2005 edition of Lines, the free McKevlin's Surf Shop newsletter. The title of the article was "Folly Beach Time Travel And Vienna Sausages." Also included in that same issue are Costa Rica Travel Tips by Ryan Coker and www.crsurf.com founder Greg "Vargas" Gordon and a story on a 1974 North Shore experience by Will Allison.

•Ormond Beach, FL, pro Falina Spires checked in to let us know she has a new clothing sponsor, Chorus Clothing.

James Jolly -- Hill

And with 150 entrants and two different raffles, organizers raised approximately $5000. The film involved Richard Prause of Grasshopper Surfboards, and is a preface to Heart Screened T-Shirt, which is Flesh Profits Nothing's first feature film. Visit www.fleshprofitsnothing.com for more.

Spy teamriders Matt Sabatino, Tyler Crawford and Cody Thompson all made the finals at the 2005 Rip Curl Grom Search's last stop in Bethune Beach, FL, with Matt and Tyler winning invites to November's national competition at Salt Creek, CA.

Rip In Peace, Austin Paine -- Dugan

James Jolly had a cool opportunity to hang out with and watch Jack Johnson perform live in front of about 20 people at 103.1 The Buzz radio station in West Palm Beach, FL, on Tuesday, September 6th. JJ even autographed a CD cover for Jolly's four-year-old daughter, Isabella, who loves his music. What a guy!

•Endless condolences to the friends and family of longtime Brevard County surfer Austin "Fatboy" Paine, who was gunned down at his home on September 23rd.
