•Summer is coming to an end, and with the ocean waters super heated along the entire seaboard, the tropics are starting to rumble and churn. To take advantage of the increased cyclonic activity, Right Coasters up north are holding heaps of surfing events. Canadian Surfrider member John Fluke said that to kick off the peak of Hurricane Season, Billabong and Surfrider Association of Nova Scotia have teamed up to launch the Billabong/ SANS September Storm Classic on Labor Day weekend from September 1st-4th at Lawrencetown Beach. Between 80 and 100 contestants are expected to come out to compete for more than $2000 in cash and prizes. Additionally, the event is a qualifier for Canadian juniors to gain points and eligibility to surf in the 2006 ISA World Junior Championships in Oz. Both amateur and pro divisions are planned for men and women of all ages. Preregistration is available at local shops, including Lance Moore's infamous Dacane Surf Shop, plus Frozen Ocean, Kannon Beach, Rossignol Surf Shop, and South Shore Surf Shop. For more info, contact Fluke at 902-464-7669 or john.fluke@lighthouselumber.com.

Another event recently held on Northeastern shores was the Town of South Kingston Recreation Department's first-ever surf camps in Rhode Island. One of the sponsors, Peter Pan at Gansett Juice Surf Shop, said almost 100 area kids came out to three separate camps held throughout July and August, where they learned to paddle, catch waves, and safely handle themselves in the various reef and beachbreak conditions along the local coastline. Sessions were held at spots like Matunuck Point, Mary's Bar, Kingston Town Beach, and Trestles Reef, with recreation department officials, local lifeguards, and top ESA competitors on-hand to instruct the aspiring, young rippers. ESA stars at the camps included Jen McGovern, Tim Burnett, Katie Imswiler, and Erica Ferrera.

Also up in Rhodey, the ESA Rhode Island State Surfing Championships went off with a spectacular display of boardriding at Narragansett Town Beach this August. In addition to standard heats, the comp included a new Retro division, where competitors rode shortboards predating 1985. Ana Barend, a 30-something female from Little Compton who chose to surf on a Richie Collins Model Wave Tools thruster shaped back in 1980, wowed the crowds by nabbing 1st-place in not just the Women's Retro final over Jen McGovern, Katie Imswiler, and Kate Ryan, but she also beat out a veteran field of male competitors to take the Open Shortboard division, as well. And you thought women couldn't surf as well as men.

Speaking of the ESA, it was announced at the beginning of August that Fortress Worldwide will now be the official timing sponsor of all ESA events. Fortress, a new action sports-based watch company out of Bonsall, CA, has reached out heavily to support the East Coast surf community. Visit www.fortressworldwide.com to learn more about the upstart timepiece biz.

One bloke making the most of his time is former ESM Associate Editor Mike Fish. Just three months out of his old gig, the Fishster is back home in his native Connecticut and blowing up as a freelance wordsmith. He's already penned several articles for Transworld Surf, including two pieces in their August issue: a write-up on shaping machines for their Surf Science column and a profile on New Jersey for their Fall travel feature. Best of all, immediately following September Surf Expo, Mike will be heading out on his first mag-sponsored surf trip. TWS and Volcom will be footing the bill for Fish to travel to the Caribbean isle of Barbados with a handful of the most talented Volcom wahines, including Aussie Claire Bevilacqua, Hawaii's Coco Ho, Florida's Sarah Hoffert, and Texas native-turned-North Shore resident Danielle Dodson. Volcom photog Tom Carey, point man Sean Slater, and teamrider Blake Jones will also tag along as chaperones to make sure the ladies don't try to take advantage of Fish's boyish good looks and nice-guy demeanor. Hey, Mike, if you ever get tired of traveling with all those beautiful women, you're welcome to come back to ESM and help out with these Blahs!

Following the July passing of Massachusetts legend and longtime Levitate Surf and Skate owner Bob Pollard (see Page 26 for the full story), famed East Coast website www.nesurf.com hosted a rocking fundraiser at The Rack in Boston to celebrate Pollard's life and help raise money for his survivors through the Robert H. Pollard Family Trust Fund. The party went down in The Rack's VIP room, which was filled with large-screen plasma TVs blasting surf videos, a heaping spread of hors d'oeuvres and appetizers, as well as plenty of tasty beverages. A huge raffle was held at the end of the night, stoking lucky partygoers out with everything from brand new surfboards and skate gear to surf videos and even two tickets to an upcoming Frank Black concert. But most of all, the event was a testament to Bob Pollard's tremendous influence on the Massachusetts surf community. You may be gone, buddy, but you're not forgotten! If you'd like to help out Bob's family by making a donation, send your check to Robert H. Pollard Family Trust Fund, c/o Eastern Bank, 1932 Ocean St., Marshfield, MA 02050.

Maine line by Dean Petty -- Photo: Sheriff

•Of course, we also can't forget about our boardriding brethren in the Great Lakes, as the record-setting heat waves, which have sizzled residents in much of the Midwest all summer, have also heated up the usually chilly lake temps. The unseasonably toasty conditions made the 3rd Annual Great Lakes Surf Luau actually live up to its tropical namesake for a change. Sponsored by Third Coast Surf Shop and held August 19th at New Buffalo City Beach, MI, this free, day-long festivity drew throngs of people from across the region. Highlights included the newly added Skimboard Jam, the team paddling relay, live acoustic surf music from local musicians, and tasty grinds provided by New Buffalo Mexican eatery Rios. Hey, if we can't stop global warming, we might as well take advantage of it like these party-hardy Lakers.

Up-and-coming Nova Scotian pro Nico Manos recently returned from an expedition to Indo, and he sent ESM a collection of sick shots showing his travel partner, young Maine ripper Dean Petty, throttling some serious turns and charging through beefy barrels during their trip. With such an advanced repertoire in body and board-testing conditions, it's pretty obvious Maine must be holding some heavy, hollow juice for Petty to practice in while he's home. That, or he's just feeling particularly limber without his typically constricting array of rubber insulation. Either way, the kid farkin' rips.

•Nico and the rest of the Eastern Canadian surfing community ought to be aware of a new business development threatening the lineups surrounding the town of Seaforth, Nova Scotia. Save The Waves Coalition told ESM that a new shellfish processing plant is set to be built in Seaforth, which would release untreated effluent directly into the Atlantic, along with threatening to restrict access to the beaches in the area. Although businessmen behind the shellfish plant taut that numerous jobs would be created by the operation, international experts who've studied the situation say the area's pristine natural habitat, which brings hundreds of tourists from around the world to the small town every year, far exceeds the economic benefit of the shellfish plant. To help preserve the rest of Seaforth's precious natural environment, visit www.savethewaves.org and get involved.

In more green news, Robert Bailey, founder of Surfrider New York City Chapter and Chairman of the newly formed Coastal Marine Resource Center, let us know CMRC's July benefit at East River Park in NYC was a tremendous success. Headlined by superstar musician Moby, the party raised both money and awareness of numerous environmental issues facing the local coastline. Also in attendance was talented South African native-turned-New York surf photographer Grant Myrdal, who donated several of his beautiful ocean-themed images as awards for local environmental leaders. CMRC was founded last year to bring together the region's numerous disparate environmental groups in the region into one, unified body. To see photos from the event or to get involved with the fight to protect the New York waterways, log on to www.thecmrc.org

Heavy-water charger and New York native Will Skudin returned home from his residence in North Carolina to premiere his new surf movie, Headfirst, at Bellmore Theater in Bellmore, NY, on August 10th. In addition to some truly amazing footage of Skudin dropping into more than a few sphincter-tightening big waves, his Unsound teammates Balaram Stack, TJ Gumiela, and Sean Killarney also scored quite a bit of celluloid love in the flick. To see for yourself, look for Headfirst to hit your local shops soon. Compiled by Chris Towery

•Over on Topsail Island, NC, our man LaNier Shepard at Undertoe Surf Shop welcomes Anarchy/ DVS rider Mike Beech to the team. Shepard also dishes out props to Undertoe/ Shepard Surfboards teamer Gus Bird, who's been tearing it up in the 3A Junior Men's division of the ESA-Central North Carolina District. Finally, LaNier says he's offering his shapes in both epoxy and polyester construction now. He also left two mini-guns, 7'4" and 7'6", in Puerto Escondido for sale. Anyone going down that way can e-mail him at shepardsurfboards@yahoo.com.

In other Topsail Island news, word is the Surf City Pier broke really good this summer, with the last few weather systems serving up glassy, overhead barrels on both sides of the structure. And local surf lensman/ Newsweek photojournalist Ed Caram has taken it upon himself to shoot the SPM (SandPiper Mafia), the loyal crew that grew up surfing Sandpiper (the original name of the pier's break). Look for some killer pics from Caram to start appearing in these pages once Hurricane Season hits its apex.

After a long, wave-engorged winter/ spring at his second home in Puerto Rico, Cape May, NJ, pro and Monument rider Jason Reagan is back in South Jersey anticipating the 2005 Atlantic Tropical Season and all the upcoming East Coast pro comps, most specifically his shop sponsor's hometown event, the Unsound Pro presented by Oakley. But Regs still had time to scribe us a story about his Pavones experience with Florida pals Tommy O'Brien, Nick Guilarte, and Chris Wilson. You can read all about it on Page 106.

If you're impressed with this issue's full-page Money Shot of relatively obscure Ocean City, MD, charger Tim Russo getting piped off his pupils at Racetracks, Uluwatu (and you should be), please take a minute to check out Spicy, Russo's stylish girls clothing line he and his girlfriend run out of their store in Bali, while also selling to core East Coast surf shops back in the Near East like K-Coast and Quiet Storm.  ESM Senior Photographer from Washington D.C. now based in Virginia Brian Maglietta asks that everyone check out www.clubofthewaves.com, and then click on the "Surf Photography" page. Maglietta just had his profile added there alongside illustrious names like Art Brewer, David Pu'u, and Tim McKenna, not to mention valued Eastern Surf lensmen Steve Fitzpatrick, Grant Myrdal, Nick LaVecchia, and Kenny Onufrock. Club Of The Waves is a U.K. site that showcases surfing, art, and photography, while exploring surfing's rich history, culture, lingo, and more. Give it a click today. It's a pretty tight site.

Outer Banks-based FCS/ Gorilla Grip rep Nigel Haynes made the trip down to the Washout in Folly Beach, SC, during the first weekend of August for the 3rd Annual South Carolina Governor's Cup of Surfing, which enjoyed a fair bit of surf. More than 700 spectators and 225 competitors showed up, with most division victories going to Palmetto Staters. However, Kure Beach, NC, duffer Tony Silvagni was able to steal a win. Visit www.sscesa.com for complete results.

Big ups to New Jersey ESM Senior Writer Tim Donnelly, who scored the cover story of the new Relix Magazine about Surfrider advocates Pearl Jam. Check your local newsstand for the issue.

Our favorite nic-fit-having videobro from Vah Beach, Brian Townsend, has got himself another project going. Besides working on his own film, the title to be announced later this year, he's editing the new Pete Frieden video and shooting a documentary about the Clark Foam closure. Stay tuned to the pages of Eastern Surf for updates.

In other surf video happenings, Digital Wunderland premiered its new movie, Critically Acclaimed, on July 14th at Red Dog's in Wrightsville Beach, NC. The video distribution company also indulged the crowd with a sneak preview of the long-awaited sequel to Joe Cheshire's filthy flick The Dirty South, ingeniously titled, you guessed it... The Dirty South 2. Go to www.digitalwunderland.com to find out more.

The 6th Annual Surfrider Toes on the Nose Team Challenge went off without a hitch on June 10th at 37th Street in Ocean City, MD, with 15 teams entering the competition--three Surfrider groups: the Jersey Shore Chapter, the DC Chapter, and the Delaware Chapter; three clubs--the 62nd Street Longboarders, the Annapolis Surf Club (two teams), and the Offshore Surf Club (OLC) of New Jersey; plus the Christian Surfing Association, and others with quirkier names like Chicks With Sticks and Belly Blocks; not to mention several shop or manufacturer-sponsored teams. The wind was offshore all day, with chest to head-high peaks gracing the comp. Visit Bruce "Snake" Gabrielson's website, www.hbsnake.com for some cool pics.

In other Delmarva deets, former ESA Executive Director of 15 years from Ocean City, MD, Kathy Phillips is delving deeper into local politics, as she recently filed to run for the District 3 Worcester County Commissioner seat. Her campaign, Friends of Kathy Phillips, will schedule Meet and Greet events and fundraisers in the near future throughout District 3. Phillips' website, www.phillipsforcountycommissioner.com, will be launched shortly.

Up in Central Jersey, Bare Wires Manager Adam Holloway is claiming heavy things to come from 20-year-old ripper Stirling McAuliffe, who plans on attacking the 2006 contest season with a vengeance.Former Vah Beacher Donaldson Miele is stoked to announce that his wife Christy gave birth to a beautiful, healthy baby daughter at 4:28 pm on July 27th, Kathryn Elizabeth Miele. She weighed in at 5 lbs., 5 oz. Congrats on your growing family, Dono!

The guys from Surftech wish to thank April and Jim "Biggie" Vaughn from Whalebone Surf Shop for hosting a cookout while they were on the Outer Banks for the Surftech East Coast Tech Tour.

What time ya got? Toof-hurty... OK, bad joke, but the Outer Banks is fortunate to have born-and-bred Southern Shores local Phillip Bald back home after he completed a mentally grueling, four-year-long postgraduate program at Tufts Dental School in Boston, MA. Bald celebrated with a sojourn to Costa Rica with lifelong buddy and SavageRips rep Ryan Rhodes. And if running this shot of Phillip tearing Terrazas a new asshole doesn't earn us a free root canal or two, we don't know what will. Glad to have ya back, Baldy!

Check out Brad Styron's website, www.surferphotos.com, for some killer photos from this summer's Buddy Pelletier Memorial Longboard Classic. We here at ESM weren't alerted about the contest until it was too late for inclusion in this issue, but we assure all that we were there in spirit, just like Buddy himself.

•No Flat Earth Surf Shop once again took top honors at their annual No Flat Earth Free Grom Contest, held in tiny windblown peaks at Brick Beach III. Winners included Tommy Ihnken, Andrew Rooney, Sean Santiago, Kelly McConnell, Kim Kepich, Jill Kepich, and Elizabeth Porter. Go to Tom Spader's site, www.localswell.com, to dig some pics.

With his wife, Jada Andre, getting her Masters in Business at UNCW, Hatteras artist/ musician/ ripper and former ESM Who Da Guy Jason Andre is now back in New Hanover County. He's been passing the time playing bagpipes for Port City Pipes and Drums and working at Surf City Surf Shop.

If you're in town for the East Coast Surfing Championships (ECSC), make sure you try to catch one of the premieres for big-wave maniac and relocated Frisco-ite Will Skudin's widely talked-about video, Headfirst, which focuses greatly on North Carolina rippers while also highlighting some of the biggest swells of 2005 at places like Todos Santos, Waimea Bay, and Cortez Bank. Stay tuned to www.surfkdh.com for updates.

And speaking of big-wave maniacs named Will, after spending several years rushing the largest, heaviest waves to come through at Playa Zicatela, word has it "Crazy Will" Dillon is back on the East Coast, where he's sure to raise the bar once the Outer Banks start thumping this autumn. Just look for the guy on the big yellow board who's the deepest. Turn to Page 106 for our "Grand Central" Feature to see a shot of Will doing what he was best known for back in Mexsuicidal plunges down the steepest shafts he could find. Compiled by Matt Pruett

•"I don't know nuthin' 'bout birthin' no babies!" But some of Florida's best surfers sure do. First we have Kieren Marie McCarthy, born to Fernandina Beach, FL, pro Kyle McCarthy and wife Jamie on July 2nd at 2:19 pm, weighing in at 7 lbs. 6 oz., and stretching 21 1/2 inches long. Then, King of the Power Hack Pete Mendia and wife Ali brought their second son, Kepa (which is "Peter" in Basque), into the world at 2:38 pm on August 1st. Kepa's dimensions are 7 lbs. 4 oz. and 20 1/2 inches long. And finally, Damien and Charlotte Hobgood welcomed their firstborn, Savanna Grace Hobgood, on July 29th at 8:48 pm, weighing a healthy 7 lbs., 8 oz. Congrats to all mentioned from your extended family here at Eastern Surf. All you web-sters out there should check out Sebastian Inlet, FL, A.I.-alike Tommy O'Brien's personal website at www.tommyobriensurfs.com, which features a short bio, heaps of pics, and even a page dedicated to his favorite photog and longtime travel pal Chris Wilson.  Think videobros are just a bunch of soulless industry hanger-on's with nothing to offer the industry but a bunch of B-clips and overamped claims? Not Matt Katsolis, Jack. This dude travels waaaaay more than you. First, he joined ESM Senior Photographer Brian Nevins, videographer Nic McLean, and pro surf studs Noah Snyder, Jesse Hines, CT Taylor, and Cheyne Cottrell on a summertime surfari in South Africa to shoot video and film for a new Walking On Water movie, and scored firing J-Bay, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Durban, and some other mysto spots part-time Africa local Cottrell put them on to. Then Matt and most of that same crew, plus three others--Will Tant, Matt Beacham, and lensman AJ Neste--took off on a Steelroots trip to Nicaragua. Actually, Matt signed on as the producer for this years' Steelroots: Beyond Borders series--building homes, working with children in orphanages, and getting blessed with epic, overhead conditions at a multitude of spots. Katsolis claimed that trip earned him some of the most insane footage he's ever shot. But we had to disagree after seeing the mini-production he sent us in July, which showed him surprising girlfriend Jenn Parsons with a marriage proposal while she was visiting her sister in Phoenix, AZ. The romantic interlude is posted on his site, www.aquafluence.com. At press time, Matt was somewhere between Israel, Indo, and New Zealand. A charmed life, indeed. One Gulf Coaster making waves is Plant City, FL's, Joey Putnall, who made his first pilgrimage to Hawaii this summer at a mere five years old, catching spots like Queens and Canoes. Way to go, Joey! We'll be keeping our eyes on you.
