Major shakas go out to ESM Senior Photographer and #1 Red Sox hater Brian Nevins from Hampton, NH, who hit a home run by scoring the October cover of Surfer Magazine. The winning image is a classic, black-and-white lineup shot of a perfect Sumatran beachbreak Brian took while traveling Indo on a Surfer photo trip. In addition to the cover, Nevins was the sole photographer for the subsequent feature story "First Class Feral," which ran a whopping 12 pages in the same issue. Onya, Nevs!

Surf art is gaining tons of notoriety throughout the industry and beyond, and to capitalize on this, Newport, RI's, Michael Montanaro hosted New England's largest surf art show this fall. The Montanaro Gallery held their Surf Art Extravaganza from September 9th through October 3rd, featuring the work of 20 leading surf artists, including John Severson, Glenn Martin, Tadeo Sparks, Andy Davis, Rick Griffin, Micah Murray, Adrian Massey, Michael and Elizabeth Montanaro, along with many others. If you missed the Extravaganza, don't worry because the gallery is currently hosting a new art/ photography exhibit displaying the paintings of Michael alongside the photos of Grant Myrdal. Myrdal is a transplanted South African who now lives in New York, and his brilliant lenswork has made the pages of numerous surf magazines, including ESM (his very own portfolio ran in 2003, Vol.12, #90). To learn about future exhibits, log on to www.montanarogallery.com.

An artist of a different sort, famed In Search Of Captain Zero author Allan Weisbecker of Montauk, NY, just finished his latest novel, titled Can't You Get Along With Anyone? A Writer's Memoir And A Tale Of A Lost Surfer's Paradise. The new book is basically a sequel to the Captain Zero tale, delving deep into the author's experience living on the point at Pavones, his work to bring Captain Zero to the big screen, and his investigation into the murder of another U.S. expat in Costa Rica. Just a few of the topics hit on in Can't You Get Along With Anyone? include why Sean Penn wants Weisbecker dead, how Weisbecker almost beat up John Cusack, why the writer took to arming himself before surfing Pavones, and how he milked Hollywood out of hundreds of thousands of dollars without a guilty conscience. Though the book is slated for official release next year, you can order advance copies at www.aweisbecker.com. Freestyle USA just announced the addition of three new faces to their New England All Star Team. Congratulations and warm welcomes go out to Casey Lockwood, who's surfing out of Steve O'Hara's Pioneers Boardshop in North Hampton, NH; John Basile from Nor'easter Surf Shop in North Scituate, MA; and Cape Cod's Brandon Silva, who rides for Sick Day Surf Shop in Wellfleet, MA. The cold country team is headed by Team Captain Marc Angelillo of Cape Cod, who scoured the New England coastline to find the creme-de-la-creme of local riders. Freestyle's squad already includes seasoned rippers, like Katy Weeks, Rachel Finn, Eric Anderson, Steve Hassett, and Danny Woodruff, who are all back onboard for their second year. To check out the new fall lineup, visit www.freestyleusa.com.

Doug Wright airs for John Carden -- Carden

Photographer John Carden, of Hampton, NH, sent ESM a sick selection of shots from the New Hammy lineups, which were inundated with heaps of fun waves courtesy of Tropical Storms Debbie and Ernesto this August. In addition to the local crew, including ripper Doug Wright, the swell also coincided with shaper Erie Peeples's Northeastern tour. Erie, who hails from New Smyrna Beach, FL, and designs Erie Surfboards, was in New England dropping off new boards at local shops and hosting promo parties at area watering holes like Portsmouth's The Red Door Barn. On his days off from the tour, Peeples managed to score some juice from Ernesto with the rest of the local crew. To see all of the photos from the swell, visit Carden's web gallery at www.johncarden.smugmug.com.

Another shaper touring the Northeast this fall is Shawn Vecchione, owner of VEC Surfboards Hawaii. Shawn is a native of Cape Cod, MA, but for the past two years he's been living in Kauai, where he's been busy cranking up his surfboard production. He returned home during the last two weeks in September and traveled to shops across New England with VEC teamrider Dillon Murphy of Cape Cod. If you missed Shawn, you can still check out the latest VEC Surfboards Hawaii line at www.vecsurfboards.com or by calling 808-634-8776.

One more big congrats goes out to Alexandra Cheney, a graduate student at Wheaton College in Norton, MA, who just received a $25,000 fellowship from the school to study the "intersection of surf culture and environmental stewardship" in some of the world's top surf destinations. Cheney received the funding as the 2006 Watson Fellow, and she'll travel to Polynesia, Australia, Japan, Costa Rica, Brazil, and South Africa to research the role surfers play in the protection of environmental resources. Originally from Santa Monica, CA, she started surfing at age 10 and became a Surfrider Foundation member at 12. During her studies, she'll immerse herself in the local communities, interviewing and photographing the surfers to explore their connection with the ocean and how that translates to coastal protection. Way to go, Alexandra!

Another female surfing scholar who deserves mention is New York's Kristin Angiulo, who was recently awarded the ESA Marsh Scholarship for the third year in a row. Kristin, who graduated from Rutgers University in 2005 with a B.A. in Communications, claimed the $1500 scholarship this August, and the funding will go toward her graduate studies at UCLA, where she'll pursue her Master of Education in Counseling and Student Affairs starting this fall. Who says surfers are all a bunch of lazy beach bums?

On the skate scene, the crew at Adio held their East Coast tour, No Sleep Till New Bedford, which started in Orlando, FL, and ran all the way up to New Bedford, MA in August. The Adio team, which includes Right Coast skate pros Bam Margera from West Chester, PA, and Ed Selego from Miami, FL, managed to fit in 13 autograph signings and 12 skate demos in just 13 days. All right guys, now that the run is over, you can finally get some shuteye!

The lads and lasses at Irish Surf Culture came all the way from the emerald green shores of Bundoran, Ireland, to attend the Newport Irish Festival in Newport, RI, which was held Labor Day weekend. Teamriders Richie Fitzgerald, Chris Wooten, and Briohny Radda hit up the Newport Yachting Center for the event, and they were spotted working the crowds and getting the word out about their new company. ISC seeks to provide Irish surfers across the globe with a product they can identify with by designing original clothing that combines ancient Celtic imagery with modern Irish surf culture. If you'd like to check out what ISC has to offer, they currently have a North American distribution center in Neptune Beach, FL, which can be reached by calling 904-247-0050, or you can simply log on to www.irishsurfculture.com.

This just in: Unsound rider and displaced New Yorker now living in Santa Cruz Chris Rempe just returned from a trip to Bali, where he scored, as usual.

Mr. Prime Time Peter Pan -- McGovern

The ESA-South New England District reported the August 19th Cape Cod Surfing Championships scored epic surf, and the event was one of the most exciting in recent memory. Though the rest of New England languished in flatness, the lineups along Cape Cod saw solid, chest to head-high groundswell with offshore winds for the entire contest. Standout competitors include Brazilian transplant Ronaldo Lima, who ripped his way to victory in the super competitive Open final, along with scoring a close 2nd in Men's Open and 3rd in Men's Longboard. Chuck and Ana Barend, who run the Christian Surfers Association Rhode Island Chapter, also saw big wins. Chuck carved his way to the title in Senior Men's and went on to take 2nd in both Open and Masters Longboard, while Ana easily won Senior Women's and Senior Women's Longboard. Finally, holding it down in the Women's division was winner Katie Weeks, who also finished 4th in Women's Longboard. To get updated on the rest of the ESA- SNE District contest schedule, call the hotline at 401-727-2605 or visit www.surfesa.org.

Thanks to photographer buddy Joe McGovern, Peter Pan recently scored the cover of Prime Time Magazine, "A Senior Living Publication" aimed at the 50-plus crowd.

Andrew Gesler, kicking it back East -- Ferber

Meat's back on the menu, boys! After doing his tour of duty in Southern California, Ocean City, NJ, pro Andrew Gesler is Right back where he belongs: on the East Coast, getting shacked in his hometown hollows and representing his clothing sponsor, Fox, in the best way possibleby running one of their hugely popular My Spot events at States Avenue on September 11th. "Learning 'bout Cuba, having some food..." What we mean is you just gotta try the Cuban sandwich at the hottest new grub spot on the Outer Banks, Ianjay Cafe, located at mile post 4.5 in Kitty Hawk. Run by local uber sponger Eric Drexler and crossboarder supreme Jeremy Peters, Ianjay Cafe boasts a plethora of international gourmet dishes, from Far East pasta and Baja-style tacos to Costa Rican casados, plus so much more. Don't forget to ask about their daily specials, and remember: you can eat in or carry out. Ianjay does catering, as well. Stop in, or call them up at 252-480-3100. Because certainly there's nothing wrong with a little feast on our time.

Growing watch company Fortress Worldwide, the official timing sponsor of the ESA, recently picked up a few new Mid-Atlantic teamriders, including Hunter and Fisher Heverly, Brett Barley, and Macon Humphrey, not to mention newly crowned ESA Eastern Men's Champ from North Florida Adam McGill.

After hosting a highly successful surf art show at Front Porch Cafe in Kill Devil Hills, NC, this summer--featuring the works of Dawn Gray of Reddawn Designs, as well as Kim Diggs, Maleah Warnock, Brent McCoy, Torin Francis, and Pete Rudolph, plus live music by Jessica McLean from her new CD, Designed To Dream--the crew acted upon a vision McCoy dreamed up called I AM (International Art Missions). The idea is to take art supplies to poor regions around the world and set up workshops in orphanages and poverty-stricken communities, so those children will one day be able to create their own masterpieces--the goal being to produce a sufficient income for those regions via an e-commerce site that sells prints of the children's original works. Coinciding with the efforts of International Surf Missions founder Billy Diggs, I AM will also work with the countries's best surfers and organizations, such as Christian Surfers. Contact Dawn Gray on her cell phone, 757-450-0799, or at her studio, 252-255-1668, to offer donations.

Virginia Beach, VA, surfer/ writer Jake Denton (who's also the editor of Virginia Maritimer) has some big travel plans this fall. With Tahiti Tourisme and Air Tahiti Nui footing the bill, Denton will trek to French Polynesia to write a travel story for the lifestyle magazine Virginia Living. He plans on surfing on Moorea, Huahine, and possibly Tikehau (one of the Tuamotu Islands). He'll also be taking his camera gear (Denton has photo experience as The Port of Virginia's official photographer), so check back to see how he scored.

Also out of VB, longtime Whalebone Surf Shop rider Tim Cole is now working with Ken Hunt (last issue's A Good Rep) handling the Billabong Juniors/ Billy Girls lines. Tim brings eight years retail experience to the table. Contact him at 757-422-5458, or e-mail tcole001@cox.net.

Wrightsville Beach, NC, up-and-comer Ross Stevens is now an official member of the Reef family.

In other Southern North Carolina news, John Pike, a sales rep at Eastern Skate and Surf Supply for 10 years whose son is PDD (autistic spectrum disorder), rallied Israel Paskowitz and the crew from Surfers Healing to come out to Wrightsville Beach for a September 13th camp. Naturally, ESS head honcho Reggie Barnes signed on as a main sponsor of the event, and Sweetwater Surf Shop Manager Tony Butler auctioned off a collectible Surfers Healing skateboard signed by 22 pro surfers and skaters, including everyone from international legends John Lucero and Tony Alva to local stars Chet Childress, Chris Curry, and Mark Yonkers. Visit www.surfershealing.org for the lowdown.

Going off on August 19th, the 16th annual Brendan Borek High Tides Memorial Surf Festival was once again a gargantuan success, drawing 300 competitors to raise money for families of cancer patients in the Cape May County, NJ, community. The day's highlights included Ben Graeff's 9.5 backhand attack and Nik Pattantyus shooting the pier in a Speedo. The late Borek's tight crew of friends return every year in his honor, and the event has grown into a skate jam, art show, and homecoming party, carrying on Brendan's spirit of benevolence.

Reef's new blood, Ross Stevens -- Mock-Bunting

Other New Jersey benefit events found that on August 27th, Bradshaw's Beach in Point Pleasant Beach played host to a SurfAid International endeavor where supporters gathered to form SurfAid's logo with their boards. The plan was to paddle out and form the logo in the water, but the torrential rain and sloppy ocean conditions forced them beachward. LBI photographer Jack Reynolds was on-hand to snap shots, and participants raised over $800 in funds to support SurfAid's humanitarian efforts. A huge thanks go out to the local businesses and organizations that backed the event. There are plans in the works for an even larger NJ Cares Paddle Out in 2007. Visit www.surfaidinternational.org to stay in the loop.

On September 3rd, some of the sport's best bodyboarders showed up at Point Pleasant Beach, NJ, for the 2nd annual Jenkinson's Pro. With Hurricane Ernesto cleaning up nicely, the boogies reveled in near epic conditions. When the spit cleared, Puerto Rico's Javier Baez came out on top. Go to www.localswell.com to peep some gnarly pics.

Speaking of gnarly pics, budding Virginia Beach, VA, lensman Ahmed O'Daniel has been on it lately, snapping up all the skate action in the area, including a recent Quiksilver demo featuring the likes of Christian Hosoi and VB's own Sergie Ventura at the new and improved Mount Trashmore vert ramp. To stay ITK with more skate action from the Mid-Atlantic, log on to www.recklessskateboards.com.

Former WRV model now based in NYC, Keith Keller checked in to tell us he and wife Marilyn (who were married on July 8th in NYC with fellow Vah Beachers Jeff Myers and Frankie Collins present as witnesses) are close to opening their surf camp in Ecuador. Their promo website is up and running at www.area0surf.com. Dig it, man.

Once upon a time last summer, surfboard sculptor Rob Stumley of Wrightsville Beach, NC, visited the Garden State for one reason: to surf Manasquan Inlet. His first day there, while hanging out at the bicycle racks trying to come up with six bucks to go on the beach, Rob met Manhattan surfer girl Sarah King. The two were married last spring, promptly opened Ocean Grove Surf Shop, and are now expecting a little girl this fall. And they lived happily ever after. Congrats to you both.

•Aaron Stark from Original Skateboards out of Newton, NJ, urges all to check out the company's longboard skateboards, which have a uniquely surfy feel, particularly their Custom 35 and Custom 45 models. The full line of boards can be seen online at www.originalskateboards.com.

•Oakley Mid-Atlantic sales rep Freddie Klevan relayed to our offices the news about 24-year-old Manasquan Inlet, NJ, ripper and University of New Hampshire student Shaun Robinson, who on July 22nd was injured in a serious automobile accident, sustaining lower lumbar spinal column injuries and a dislocated right hip. Spinal surgery, fracture-repairing rod and screw insertions, plus hip and displaced vertebrae operations followed, and now Shaun is recovering and going through rehabilitation therapy at Kessler Institute in West Orange, NJ. His doctors say he's looking at a potential yearlong recovery, which obviously means no surf time. If you can, please take the time to e-mail him at chaunce123@hotmail.com to offer any words of encouragement.

Central North Carolina spokesman and longtime shredder Paul Poston called up to alert everyone that state officials approved the Buddy Pelletier North Carolina license plate designs, and they should be on sale any day now. He also said the Buddy Pelletier Surf Clinic drew a whopping 85 kids this summer to Fort Macon State Park. The highlight for Poston, the clinic founder and director, had to be seeing his own daughter stand up on a board for the first time. Visit www.buddypelletier.com for more information.

And finally, ESM Publisher/ Senior Photographer Tom Dugan and Editor Matt Pruett wish to extend their thanks to Outer Banks pilot and ace ripper Eric Dreelin for flying the duo, along with Senior Photographer Mickey "2M" McCarthy, high above the island during the Hurricane Helene swell to gather images for our upcoming ESA Easterns feature (check back next ish). To dig some of 2M's unique aerial photos, go to his gallery on the Outer Banks website, www.surfkdh.com. Compiled by Matt Pruett

Following the Clark Foam debacle last year, the U.S. shaping biz was thrown into complete chaos. While things have improved over subsequent months, it can sometimes still be a pain in the ass to get exactly the right surfboard from top shapers. To avoid the hassles that go into getting a custom board, Florida's Chris Hough says you should try his new business, The Surfboard Warehouse. Based outside of Orlando, Hough's company is set up to be a helpful middle man, performing all of the paperwork and ordering of custom surfboards, while taking the time to track down the specific shaper you want doing the job, even on the west coast. The Surfboard Warehouse is currently partners with Lost, Linden, Cordell, WRV, Cannibal, Rat, BAT, Orion, Lucas, as well as Wooster, and their relationship is tight with the craftsmen, so you'll receive the right shape with the least amount of stress. In addition to boards, The Surfboard Warehouse also carries gear from FCS, Future Fins, Speeed Fins, Stay Covered, Sticky Bumps, and Ocean & Earth. They ship your completely shaped boards to you within four to six weeks and promise to get them to you anywhere, even if you're traveling. To learn more, visit www.thesurfboardwarehouse.com.

Speaking of boardbuilding, the crew at Marko Foam wanted to let Right Coast shapers know they can purchase Marko Foam blanks through their new Eastern distributor, Fiberglass Florida. The company, which is in Rockledge, FL, supplies both polyurethane and polystyrene (EPS) Marko Foam blanks, along with a full selection of other shaping supplies. To check out the current inventory, visit www.fiberglassflorida.com or www.markofoam.com.

The crew in Texas reports this summer has been pitiful in terms of waves, but a late-August swell delivered enough juice to keep Matagorda locals satiated until the hurricanes start churning in earnest. Even though the surf was only waist to chest-high, guys like James Walters, Layne Losee, Kerry Pitts, Mark Zwhar, and Brett Hopkins were carving deep gouges and boosting fat blasts as if the waves were well-overhead. Everyone agreed hot up-and-coming grom Clint Richard particularly stood out, showing power and style beyond his years. Do we smell a Who Da Guy? Keep posted to ESM to stay on top of Clint and all of the other Longhorn State rippers.

Todd & Chalee Holland -- Jimbo

In other Texas news, James Walters and Layne Losee at JEL Productions have finally wrapped up production of their new surf video Cookies & Cream, which will document the best tropical swells of the banner 2005 Hurricane Season in the Gulf. Additionally, the flick will get up close and personal by profiling a handful of the top local surfers, along with giving a sneak peak at some of the hot groms and local wahines. Cookies & Cream is set to premiere in Houston in November 2006, and a fashion show featuring local lines will be held before the showing. The venue is still being chosen, but you can check out www.jelsurf.com for updates.

In South Florida, Deerfield Beach's Wesley DeSouza reportedly threw a raucous birthday bash for friend Matt Oberman, where things got a bit out-of-hand. Not only did the fiesta feature copious amounts of liquid libations and naughty nubiles, but at some point during the night, DeSouza displayed some quite revealing snapshots of Oberman's brief but beautiful stint as a fashion model. With the threat of those images being leaked to the press, Oberman decided the best defense would be a good offense and sent in his own revealing photo of DeSouza manning the beer bong at the party while dressed in '80s-style Underoos and leg warmers. Oberman promises even worse shots will be forthcoming if his modeling photos ever see the light of day. We've said it before, but we'll say it again, kids: alcohol and cameras are a dangerous combination!

If you're looking to take a surf trip soon, contact the righteous folks at Surf Express. The longtime Central Florida surf travel agency, which is run by Carol Holland, mother of former ASP World Tour pro Todd Holland, recently moved their headquarters to Cocoa Beach. The Surf Express office is now inside the Beach Complex at 4001 North Atlantic Avenue. Stop by and book your trip with Carol or agents like Jason Idone and longboarder/ author Jim MacLaren. Ask about their Galapagos package, which includes trips aboard a 40-foot Sea Ray that takes you from break to break, guaranteeing you will surf alone. One surfer who's seen his fair share of globetrotting is Flager Beach, FL, native Will Tant. Tant is known for not only traveling the earth in search of surf, but he also combines his mission for waves with humanitarian causes. In light of his volunteer work in Sri Lanka after the 2004 tsunami and his construction of homes for needy locals in Nicaragua, Will was selected as one of the featured surfers on SurfAid's next Wave Of Compassion boat trip. SurfAid International is a nonprofit group dedicated to promoting health and social programs throughout the Mentawai Islands, and the Wave Of Compassion boat trip is an opportunity for everyday surfers to win a chance to tour the Mentawais on the Indies Trader III, where they'll ride the region's myriad pristine breaks alongside the top pros, while lending a hand to locals as part of SurfAid's mission. The winner plus one guest will travel for 10 days with Will Tant, Brad Gerlach, Dane Ward, and one more yet-to-be-announced pro. The entire trip will be documented by legendary photog Aaron Chang and acclaimed surf filmmaker Sonny Miller through daily updates on Surfline. To become eligible, all you have to do is submit a donation through SurfAid International. To get started, visit www.surfaidinternational.org.

With the way things are going, Orlando will probably be a major surf travel destination soon. Not only is the construction of the much-anticipated Ron Jon Surfpark nearing completion, but Fernando Landa announced he'll be opening a new Orlando-based surf shop called Adrenalina, which will house a Flowrider, along with all of the traditional shop trappings. Landa, who will be a manager at the store, said the shop and wave machine should be up and running this fall, and from there, he'll assist with the building of an additional store in Miami complete with Flowrider in 2007. If the name Adrenalina sounds familiar, that's because it's the title of a successful action sports channel on the Fox Spanish network. With that kind of industry clout, the new venture is bound to blow up. To get more info on Adrenalina Surf Shop, call their business office at 305-770-4488.

•Lopezes, Slaters, Hobgoods--there's quite a few surfing dynasties on the Right Coast, and one that's currently shaping up to be quite diverse is the Tanner family of South Carolina. Patriarch Glenn has been a longtime fixture in Folly Beach's competitive surf scene, regularly winning both Grandmaster Shortboard and Grandmaster Longboard trophies, but now his daughter Kristin and son Evan are also beginning to dominate their divisions. Evan, who's only 10 years old, was named ESA-SSC Grom of the Year last season and was just picked up by McKevlin's Surf Shop and Natural Art, while his 17-year-old sister Kristin, who's also on the McKevlin squad, recently claimed 1st-place in Girls Shortboard and 2nd-place in Girls Longboard in the Folly Beach Wahine Classic. And though he's not part of the Tanner clan, Bryant Thomas will also be joining Evan and Kristin as the latest member of the McKevlin's team.

Sterling Spencer, making the most out of his time on Fortress - C. Wilson

A couple new sponsor switch-ups found Shea Lopez joining Hot Tuna and another Gulfer, Pensacola, FL's, Sterling Spencer, signing to the Fortress Watches roster, joining fellow Floridian Chris Ropero as Fortress's East Coast anchormen.

With all of the recent hype surrounding Nicaragua and its numerous perfect lineups, St. Augustine uber pros Gabe Kling and Jody Davis told ESM they just purchased a parcel of land down near Popoyo. Former Rip Curl sales and promotions guru Mike Makos is now working the same gig at Kustom Shoes, and he told ESM that longtime South Florida ripper Dimitri Kjos was just tapped to represent Kustom in South Florida and the Caribbean. Makos said Kjos also reps for Von Zipper and Billabong. To reach Kjos, call 954-786-8283. And while we're on the subject of new faces, a hearty congrats goes out to Mike on the birth of son Joseph Michael, who was born on August 11th, weighing in at six lbs. one ounce. Compiled by Chris Towery
