•Although the horror flick Friday The 13th is filled with endless scenes of brutal butchery, it's nothing compared to the slaughter East Coast surfers inflicted, when the ominous day rolled around once again this October. By the time the 24 hours were up, not only had Kelly Slater sealed his record-setting eighth ASP World Title by hacking up Aussie pro Joel Parkinson in the Billabong Pro Mundaka semifinals, but surfers up and down the Eastern Seaboard tore the guts out of a clean, head-high groundswell delivered by an early-season nor'easter. In New Hampshire, photog John Carden set upon an unnamed beachbreak with Granite State rippers Casey Lockwood, Luke Furtney, Devlin Hart, and Garret Krapf, who would've made movie villain Jason proud by carving gaping gouges and penetrating deep into the bowels of the unsuspecting swell. To view documentation of the carnage, visit Carden's gallery at www.johncarden.smugmug.com. •The merciless wave abuse may have been a case of revenge, since earlier in the week, the Atlantic delivered a pretty serious beatdown to surfers in the Fourth Annual Surfrider Foundation New England Team Challenge at Nantasket Beach, MA. The same low that provided such good waves on the 13th pummeled competitors--many of whom barely made the paddle out--with six to eight-foot, onshore, stormchunks. The swell was so treacherous, many riders only caught one wave in their heats, rather than deal with the relentless whitewater. Eleven teams from local shops, schools, clubs, and even the Coast Guard (for surfing, not rescue) came out, but it was Surfrider Rhode Island that took the win. The contest is organized every year to bolster Surfrider membership in New England, and despite the not-so-friendly conditions, several dozen new members signed up during the event. •From the wild northlands of Canada, ESM received word from Nova Scotia's John Fluke that the Billabong September Storm Surf Classic went off with classic conditions. Held at Novi's Lawrencetown Beach on September 11th, the comp saw solid head-high swell with offshore winds. Locals JD Patterson, Nico Manos, and Justin Huston, as well as American pros like California's Ricky Whitlock and Florida's Chris Ropero, battled it out for the $1500 purse. In the end, Whitlock came out on top, but the scores were hard to call, as each competitor pulled off up to a half-dozen lip hits, cutbacks, and floaters on the long, peeling walls. The event was a big deal for the community, as well, with almost 400 spectators coming out to watch the show. For complete results and photos, visit www.surfns.com.
•Long Beach, NY, ripper and Unsound teamrider Brandon Coons insists everyone check out his brother Adam Coons's band Tripdavon, namely their new release, The Enlightened Operative. It rocks. Visit www.tripdavon.com for a sneak peek. •In New York, West Gilgo's "Pistol" Pete Armata recently faced his own battle against shipping giant UPS. Pete was contacted by Hank Raymond, agent to Hawaiian legend Rabbit Kekai, who told him a friend had purchased two vintage longboards from a Manhattan dealer, but UPS wanted $800 to ship them to California. Tasked with constructing a more economical solution for mailing the boards--a 1962 9'6" Jacobs and 1967 9'10" Surfboards Hawaii--The Pistol proved to be the right tool for the job. After a week's worth of labor, several rolls of duct tape, 80 feet of bubble wrap, and four cases of beer, Pete secured the logs inside a custom-designed 11-foot wooden box, which safely transported them across the country. For his next assignment, we're hoping Armata can come up with a similar container for shipping the bulging stacks of ESM's monstrous January Surf Expo issue. •In other New York deets, ESM learned that Long Beach High School just launched their very first surf club. The club's advisor, Danny Bobis, said the organization has already scheduled a host of events, including beach cleanups, a shaping demo, gear swap, video premieres, and fundraisers for nonprofit groups like Surf Aid International and Surfrider. First up on the calendar was the club's Fall Community Beach Cleanup at National Boulevard on October 29th. The student-surfers, along with several members of the public, scoured the sand for trash, and the club displayed some of the salvaged items on campus for an environmental project. Bobis noted he's also looking for neighboring Long Island schools with surf clubs or teams to coordinate activities with, along with any sales reps willing to sponsor the LIHS club. To get involved, contact Bobis at lbhssurfclub@hotmail.com. •From our rockstar department, Rhode Island madman Sid Abruzzi said his band Big World will be rocking The Hustler in Indialantic, FL, on January 11th in conjunction with the 2007 O'Neill Sebastian Inlet Pro. Then they'll be headlining the Volcom party in Orlando on the opening night of Surf Expo. If you think Sid tears it up in the lineup, you gotta see him on stage.
•In other Rhode Island news, surf photog Joe McGovern just returned from the emerald green expanses of Ireland, and word has it he's holding a filthy collection of images from the transatlantic voyage. McGovern has made the pilgrimage to his ancestral homeland for years, and he even hosted the Irish Surf Culture team when they visited the States this summer, so he was seriously dialed in with Irish locals, who celebrated the prime fall wave season with the Bundoran Ocean Fest while he was there. Ocean Fest rocked out with four days of music, surf films, local beach culture, ocean-themed art, and seafood. To see one of Joe's images of Bundoran's finest break, The Peak, double-overhead and firing, visit www.nesurfari.com. •Another East Coaster venturing to Ireland this fall was Rockaway Beach, NY's, Frank Cullen. Cullen and his wife, Pauline, who's a native of the country, visited the Irish coast around Galway and surfed five different spots. The notoriously hospitable locals, including Aonghus Collins, plus Terry Cormican and wife Bernie, treated the couple with a supremely generous and welcoming spirit, even allowing them use of their entire quivers for their stay. Frank and Pauline can't wait to return, and they send both "Aloha and Failte" to their gracious hosts. •Up in Maine, Aquaholics Surf Shop recently opened a rental outlet by the pier in Old Orchard Beach. The store offers hourly and daily rentals for surfboards, bodyboards, wetsuits, and other surf gear. Additionally, local artists Amy Bartlett and Lizzie Muse have been working hard on a seascape mural for the store's back room. Go to www.aquaholicsurf.com for more info. •Speaking of art, Cape Ann, MA, surf artists Karen and Jon Conant hosted their first open house at their new Everlution Forms studio in Rockport this October. Local waveriders came out and knocked back a few drinks while checking out the new digs, which featured surf and ocean-themed creations, including furniture, fish sculptures, retroglass designs, and pottery. If Everlution sounds familiar, that's because the duo's work was featured in ESM's 2004 Surf Art Feature (Vol. 13, #96). To see more of their designs, check out their site, www.everlutionforms.com.
•In the last item from our creative files, NYC art/music guru Todd DiCiurcio was super jazzed to tell us he just wrapped up a live painting display alongside Robert Pollard at the musician's November 13th concert at the Bowery Ballroom. Former lead singer of Guided By Voices, Pollard was performing in support of his new solo album, Normal Happiness, and in addition to his music and DiCiurcio's artwork, Michael Imperioli, who plays Christopher on The Sopranos, also jammed out with his indie psychedelic band La Dolce Vita. To view Todd's art, visit www.metdcstudio.com. •Congrats go out to Kennebunkport, ME's, Aimee Vlachos, owner of Wahine Kai East Surf School, and local surfer/ carpenter Shawn Bullard, for their September wedding on Martha's Vineyard. The newlyweds took their vows on a 110-foot sailboat docked on the posh island, and they plan to honeymoon in the Dominican Republic this February. •In addition to his work as a surf videographer, New Hampshire's Joe Carter can now add diaper changer to his resume, as he and girlfriend Nicole recently welcomed the birth of their first child, Maleeha Lucina Carter. With swell still booming from Hurricane Florence, Maleeha knew Dad would have to work, so she waited until the waves faded before emerging into the world on September 14th, measuring 20 inches and weighing 8.3 lbs. Big congrats to the newly enlarged Carter clan! Compiled by Chris Towery |

The idea is to take art supplies to poor regions around the world and set up workshops in orphanages and poverty-stricken communities, so those children will one day be able to create their own masterpieces--the goal being to produce a sufficient income for those regions via an e-commerce site that sells prints of the children's original works. Coinciding with the efforts of International Surf Missions founder Billy Diggs, I AM will also work with the countries's best surfers and organizations, such as Christian Surfers. Contact Dawn Gray on her cell phone, 757-450-0799, or at her studio, 252-255-1668, to offer donations.
•Virginia Beach, VA, surfer/ writer Jake Denton (who's also the editor of Virginia Maritimer) has some big travel plans this fall. With Tahiti Tourisme and Air Tahiti Nui footing the bill, Denton will trek to French Polynesia to write a travel story for the lifestyle magazine Virginia Living. He plans on surfing on Moorea, Huahine, and possibly Tikehau (one of the Tuamotu Islands). He'll also be taking his camera gear (Denton has photo experience as The Port of Virginia's official photographer), so check back to see how he scored. •Also out of VB, longtime Whalebone Surf Shop rider Tim Cole is now working with Ken Hunt (last issue's A Good Rep) handling the Billabong Juniors/ Billy Girls lines. Naturally, ESS head honcho Reggie Barnes signed on as a main sponsor of the event, and Sweetwater Surf Shop Manager Tony Butler auctioned off a collectible Surfers Healing skateboard signed by 22 pro surfers and skaters, including everyone from international legends John Lucero and Tony Alva to local stars Chet Childress, Chris Curry, and Mark Yonkers. The day's highlights included Ben Graeff's 9.5 backhand attack and Nik Pattantyus shooting the pier in a Speedo. The late Borek's tight crew of friends return every year in his honor, and the event has grown into a skate jam, art show, and homecoming party, carrying on Brendan's spirit of benevolence.
•Other New Jersey benefit events found that on August 27th, Bradshaw's Beach in Point Pleasant Beach played host to a SurfAid International endeavor where supporters gathered to form SurfAid's logo with their boards. The plan was to paddle out and form the logo in the water, but the torrential rain and sloppy ocean conditions forced them beachward. LBI photographer Jack Reynolds was on-hand to snap shots, and participants raised over $800 in funds to support SurfAid's humanitarian efforts. A huge thanks go out to the local businesses and organizations that backed the event. There are plans in the works for an even larger NJ Cares Paddle Out in 2007. Visit www.surfaidinternational.org to stay in the loop. •On September 3rd, some of the sport's best bodyboarders showed up at Point Pleasant Beach, NJ, for the 2nd annual Jenkinson's Pro. With Hurricane Ernesto cleaning up nicely, the boogies reveled in near epic conditions. When the spit cleared, Puerto Rico's Javier Baez came out on top. Go to www.localswell.com to peep some gnarly pics. •Speaking of gnarly pics, budding Virginia Beach, VA, lensman Ahmed O'Daniel has been on it lately, snapping up all the skate action in the area, including a recent Quiksilver demo featuring the likes of Christian Hosoi and VB's own Sergie Ventura at the new and improved Mount Trashmore vert ramp. Their promo website is up and running at www.area0surf.com. Dig it, man. •Once upon a time last summer, surfboard sculptor Rob Stumley of Wrightsville Beach, NC, visited the Garden State for one reason: to surf Manasquan Inlet. His first day there, while hanging out at the bicycle racks trying to come up with six bucks to go on the beach, Rob met Manhattan surfer girl Sarah King. The two were married last spring, promptly opened Ocean Grove Surf Shop, and are now expecting a little girl this fall. And they lived happily ever after. Congrats to you both. •Aaron Stark from Original Skateboards out of Newton, NJ, urges all to check out the company's longboard skateboards, which have a uniquely surfy feel, particularly their Custom 35 and Custom 45 models. •Oakley Mid-Atlantic sales rep Freddie Klevan relayed to our offices the news about 24-year-old Manasquan Inlet, NJ, ripper and University of New Hampshire student Shaun Robinson, who on July 22nd was injured in a serious automobile accident, sustaining lower lumbar spinal column injuries and a dislocated right hip. Spinal surgery, fracture-repairing rod and screw insertions, plus hip and displaced vertebrae operations followed, and now Shaun is recovering and going through rehabilitation therapy at Kessler Institute in West Orange, NJ. His doctors say he's looking at a potential yearlong recovery, which obviously means no surf time. If you can, please take the time to e-mail him at chaunce123@hotmail.com to offer any words of encouragement. •Central North Carolina spokesman and longtime shredder Paul Poston called up to alert everyone that state officials approved the Buddy Pelletier North Carolina license plate designs, and they should be on sale any day now. He also said the Buddy Pelletier Surf Clinic drew a whopping 85 kids this summer to Fort Macon State Park. Visit www.buddypelletier.com for more information. •And finally, ESM Publisher/ Senior Photographer Tom Dugan and Editor Matt Pruett wish to extend their thanks to Outer Banks pilot and ace ripper Eric Dreelin for flying the duo, along with Senior Photographer Mickey "2M" McCarthy, high above the island during the Hurricane Helene swell to gather images for our upcoming ESA Easterns feature (check back next ish). •Summer is over, and those annoying tourists have finally returned home, taking their Speedos, sunburns, and water-wings with them. But when they depart, Jim-Bob, his wife Lucy-Mae, and their six kids often leave behind heaps of trash on our beaches. However, Stuart, FL, locals are taking matters into their own hands... literally. At the end of September, Treasure Coast Surfrider hosted a combo surf contest/ beach cleanup on Hutchinson Island with members of the Martin County Community High School Surf Team. Students, parents, teachers, and other supporters came out to pitch in with the trash pickup and root for their favorite contestants. The comp scored decent surf, which provided Josh Vasquez with enough juice to capture 1st-place. Everyone was also treated to a catered BBQ feast from Stuart Fine Foods and Hurricane Wings, while Surf Central kicked down prizes, including loot from Sanuk, Dragon, Ogio, and Quiksilver. Additional props go out to elder rippers Teague Taylor, Scotty Connell, Ronnie Giesing, Eric Ingeman, and Michael Stratman for judging the contest. For their next event, TC Surfrider looks to host an interscholastic competition, pitting high school surf teams from Jupiter to Sebastian against one another. Stay tuned to www.surfrider.org for details. •Al Rumbos, Co-Director of the Florida Bodyboarding Association, told ESM the FBA held their first contest in mid-September at the Boardwalk in Indialantic. Top finishers include (from 1st to 4th-place) Devin Ricke, Dan Worley, Paris Hornsby, and Austin Dalton. To find out about upcoming FBA events, visit www.alrumbos.com. •Speaking of big winners, Puerto Rico's Dylan Graves got his own taste of victory this fall, ripping his way to 1st-place at the Nixon Surf Challenge at San Sebastien, Spain's, Playa Zurriola. Graves by no means walked away with an easy victory, though. Actually, by the last half of the final, it looked like Tahiti's Hira Teriinatoofa was going to take the title, but Dylan managed to snag a ramped-up set wave before the horn and launched a sky-high air-reverse for the win. On the podium, his victory became even more poignant when Dylan announced he was somewhat under the weather from the infamous Euro nightlife. "It's been a rough couple of days with all the parties that have been going on," Graves explained. "But drinks are on me tonight!" Say what you want about his indulgences, but one thing is for sure: on land or in the water, Dylan isn't afraid to charge.
•From the tearful goodbyes department, ESM would like to offer big congratulations and good luck to longtime freelance writer supreme Eric Seeger on his new job as Editor of WNC Magazine, a regional lifestyle publication out of Asheville, NC. Eric got his very first taste of the journalism biz as an intern here at ESM in the late-'90s, and after that, he eventually landed a cushy gig as Managing Editor at Faircount Publishing in Tampa, FL. But since the birth of their first child, Gabriel, and plans for another nino in the works, he and wife Michelle decided the Carolina mountain air would be good for their burgeoning brood, so after securing the new job, the Seeger clan packed up their belongings, put the Florida house up for sale, and headed for the hills. Although we're sure he'll be busy for the first few months, we're hoping Eric will eventually find some time to pen us a few more of his infamous Eargasm reviews. Until then, we wish you guys the best of luck, and want to remind you to keep a spare bedroom fixed up for our upcoming ESM snowboard trip. •In between winning heats and doing photo trips for Volcom, Melbourne Beach, FL's, Kyle Garson is working out of his second home in Costa Rica, helping his father Richard and his brother Joel with their real estate business, Ranchos Las Lomas. The Garson family, which also owns Loma del Mar Surf Camp in Playa Hermosa, offers great deals on property and homes in the Jaco/ Hermosa region. To find out more, visit www.ranchoslomas.com. •Another venture going on south of the border this fall was a special Quiksilver surf camp at the U.S. Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, for active military personnel and their families. On October 14th, Quik teamers Matt Kechele, David Awbrey, Skeeter Zimmerman, along with Roxy riders Katie McLeod and Amy Murphree, were on-hand to provide free surf lessons, sign autographs, and give away merchandise to the more oceanically inclined members of the nearly 8000 U.S. residents living on the base. Though it's often forgotten, the Caribbean isle of Cuba holds a wide range of quality reefs and beachbreaks, including Windmills, where the Quik event was held. •Ron Long, East Coast Regional Manager for Surf Hardware International, told us FCS and Gorilla Grip just signed Gulf Coaster Sterling Spencer, while FCS also renewed their contract with eight-time ASP World Champ Kelly Slater for another five years. Ron also leaked that Surf Hardware will soon be selling blanks from Australia's Eskimo Foam, which they purchased from Aussie shaper James "Chilli" Cheal. You can see their new foam cores at www.eskimoindustries.com. •Further foam festivities find (alliteration is way cool) Justin and Kelly Domyan of Jacksonville, FL, now selling MDI polyurethane blanks out of their new shop, Domyan Foam. A handful of her Folly Beach neighbors returned from the 2006 ESA Easterns bearing some shiny new trophies, including Glenn Tanner, who claimed titles in Grandmasters and Legends Longboard; Jenny Brown, who took 3rd in both Ladies Shortboard and Ladies Longboard; Hampton Kohn, who claimed 4th in Menehune Bodyboard; and Cooper Neil, who snagged 6th-place in Menehune Longboard. Way to go, guys and gals! •Another South Carolinian ruling the heat sheets is transplanted Huntington Beach pro Mike Hoisington, who nabbed the title at the first event in the HB Pro-Am Surf Series at Huntington Beach Pier this October. For his achievement, Hoyo not only garnered big-time bragging rights, but he drove home from the contest in a brand-new Dodge truck. •Lady longboarder Jennifer Flanigan of Jupiter, FL, recently launched her own website at www.seaponylife.com. The online offering includes tons of cool photos from Jenni's travels around the world, articles about her surfing adventures, and even some of her homegrown art. •This just in--Deerfield Beach, FL's, Matt Oberman now surfs for Vestal Watches in addition to working as their South Florida Marketing Manager. •On the opposite end of the coast in Neptune Beach, FL, surfing artist/ musician Sean Mahan wanted to get the word out about his band Verde's new CD, The Undeserved Current. The album, released on Bakery Outlet Records and distributed by No Idea, is full of groovy, surf-inspired, indie rock that's perfect for pre or post-surf tuneage.
•The crew at Pit Surf Shop just returned from a trip to Nicaragua, where they scored all-time waves in the San Juan Del Sur region. Super grom Andy Karabinchak stood out among the pack, ripping and shredding the hollow peaks with Cuisinart-like efficiency. •Since this is our Hurricane Issue, it would probably be pertinent to have at least one tropically themed Blah, so here it is: Lyn Meyers told ESM he and the rest of the SoFlo crew made the web pages of www.surfermag.com, after local photog Danny Moody sent in a batch of images from an epic Hurricane Florence session at Reef Road. Lyn also noted that he just signed with West along with Scott Posner. •Got trophies? Karina Petroni does. In fact, the North Florida pro has so many, she's giving them away. Petroni recently donated all of her most-prized metal, including big ones like the NSSA Governor's Cup, to Mitch Kaufmann of the ESA-North Florida District, instructing him to use them as prizes for future contests, in an effort to give back to the sport that has given her so much. Either that, or she just wants to clean out her overloaded garage. |
