NE BLAHS

We hate to admit it, but the one thing consoling us at ESM during the ugly summer months is the deluded probability that the rest of the coast is also without a ridable bump. From mid-May through early June, high pressure doomed most Southeastern and Mid-Atlantic beaches with a premature
Eric Eichin -- Nelson
(meaning pre-July) flat spell, and our staff bega n to hold our heads up, thinking, “Yeah, it’s not so bad here.” That was until we spoke with Long Island, NY’s, Eric Eichin, who told us Lido Beach was enjoying several days of head-high-plus surf during this abnormally bleak period. Eric wouldn’t get to enjoy too much of it himself, however, seeing as he’s grounded on his wooden tower all summer long with lifeguarding duties. What made matters worse for him (besides being bugged by a surf magazine) was that buddy Chris Martin had just returned from Jeffrey’s Bay where he scored the famous pointbreak pumping rights in the well-overhead range with minimal crowds. Since Cory Wells’ Hard Corps Surf Shop seemingly disappeared into the Bermuda Triangle, the “other shop” south of Boston to the Cape, Nor’Easter, put us on the horn with employee Drew Condon, who was stoked to say they’re now carrying Matt Kechele Surfboards along with Aaron Chang Clothing. Drew also told us that Nor’Easter’s plans to hold a grommet contest with Rhode Island’s Elemen tal Surf Shop sometime in August. In other Massachusetts news, Elaine Barse from The Green Room, out of Vineyard Haven maintained that even though water temperatures are still dragging around the mid-50’s, things in the shop are heating up quickly in the store as JC Hawaii Surfboards are flying out the door. Elaine also wanted to get the word out that Vineyard Haven finally received permission to build a community skatepark on the grounds of a local school. “All we need now is the money and insurance approval,” she said. There will also be ramp sponsorships for sale once the park is built. One local skater who’ll definitely be supporting the new park is 14-year-old wonder-rat Marlon Grennan, who just got picked up by Reef and Zoo York. For details, call The Green Room at 508-693-6888. •Myles Point of Warm Winds Surf Shop sent us a few blahs from the Narragansett area, the first concerning employee Ryan Kelly, who just graduated from Salve University with high honors. He also told us Smith Optics are now in the shop and selling like AOL shares. Myles now rides for Dekkerz and is moving to The Rock this fall to attend classes at The University of Hawaii at Manoa, admitting he’s ready to charge now that he’s finally back in the water. Both Myles and Greg Levy just recovered from an automobile accident occurring at the Surf Expo in January.
Chris Martin -- Nelson
The crash gave Greg a major gash on the noggin and left Myles with a broken foot. Glad you’re back boys, and just in time for hurricane season! Speaking of Greg, his father, Dave Levy, is planning to sell the Watershed building some time after summer, while Peter Pan will open a new Watershed shop closer to the beach. Although Dave won’t be behind the books anymore, he will continue to shape and repair surfboards. •Phil Charey took the time to tell us about Cinnamon Rainbows, one of the most hardcore surf shops in New Hampshire, expanding its size to six times what it was, even including a shaping bay. Phil also wanted to get the poop out on Ryan Olson and 2SI-sponsored grom Casey Lockwood, both showing promise as teamriders. •The stork’s been spending a lot of time in the Hampton area, dropping little Drew off for Mike and Sarah Cropper. According to Phil,Young DMC” is the new rightful heir to the Hampton surf legacy his dad helped create. Another lucky couple, Brock and Jenna Dunn, had a little baby girl, Gabbi, in early May. A warm congratulations to all the parents. •Syco Surf Shop’s Mike Morin is currently searching for someone to take over the Sanford, ME, area’s Surfrider Foundation activities, as he is now finding himself without the time. Any energetic volunteers interested in helping run the meetings and getting a new administration established, please contact Mike at 207-324-3738. When asked what he’s been so busy doing lately, Mike simply said he’s been running the shop, shaping a few custom

boards for Bill Woodward, and representing Maine’s local crew at Ogunquit Rivermouth with fellow ace Al Bigby. New Hampshire fools best step off and recognize! •Also in Maine, Dana Trumann called ESM to tell us that he just opened another Moose County store in Old Orchard Beach. The new shop will be located on Grand Avenue and will host this year’s only Maine ESA contest on August 4th. For more info, call Dana at 207-761-8084 or go to moosecounty.com. Rhode Island photographer Ted Sorlein called us up to rub it in deeper about all the low pressure systems that keep exiting off the Northeast, creating overhead surf at the best breaks with, “warmer water coming in—no gloves or hood anymore.” Sorlein went on to say Little Rincon had some great waves lately with Jamie Risser standing out in-between commercial fishing sessions. We later caught up with Risser who told us about his new sponsors, Body Glove Wetsuits and Anarchy Eyewear, before making us even more jealous. According to the Rizz, fellow Watershed teamrider Steve Fitzpatrick, no relation to senior staff photographer Steve Fitzpatrick, left in early June for a five-week trip to peak-season Indonesia. Have fun Steve, but watch out for the Brazilians. They’re hip to Indo. Montauk, NY’s,Charlie Weimar, just returned from Indonesia. He and his pops, Chuck Weimar, spent three weeks in the Mentawais on the Indies Trader II, enjoying great waves for a priceless, father/ son surf trip. Charlie returned to Montauk to earn his Captain’s License in commercial fishing, making the 21-year-old one of the youngest skippers in New York. •Gravis Footwear, based out of Burlington, VT, is proud to announce its “Artist Series” collection of footbeds, featuring limited edition artwork created by a hand-selected crew of globally-renowned urban artists. This series will pre-empt Gravis’ global launch of individually packaged Perimeter Support footbeds as a compliment of its men’s and women’s footwear, bags, and softgoods offerings. Laguna Beach, CA, native-turned-Newport, RI, waterman Joe Pierik traveled back to the Golden State a few times this past year before settling once again in the Northeast to enjoy summer swells with more elbow room. Pierik also told us he’s giving guided tours on saltwater sportfishing trips as well as paddleboarding, longboarding, and outrigger canoeing. Now that’s how you stay motivated during a flat spell! New Jersey surfer Neil Saunders is proud to announce that Garage Conspiracy Productions will release a new video called Drenched in Devotion due out in late August. The flick documents the East Coast longboarding scene, exploring the surfing of both well-known Right Side gliders and underground legends. The film opens a window into the state of present-day longboarding, blending interviews of past and present key East

Coast players with numerous segments of solid surfing. For more information, visit www.garageconspiracy.com. •Eastern Lines successfully completed their move to a new, two-floor store located on Ocean Avenue in Belmar, NJ. Owner Don Tarrant added that teamrider Brian Dalton briefly escaped the duties as a full-time student, husband, and father of two when he stole the show at the hotly contested lineup across the street from the new shop. According to Don, Brian absolutely took over during the best swell of the season in early May. That’s right, MY house bitch! South Jersey’s Frank Sarno is currently asking for donations of gift certificates and products to be raffled off and given away to contestants at the Absecon Island Surfing Championships, held sometime in mid-August. If you’d like to help keep the surfing spirit alive on Absecon, e-mail Frank at Indiesurfboards@ hotmail.com. •Michael Baron made it down to New Jersey late this spring to do some shaping and promos for Byrne Surfboards. Shops lucky enough to witness Baron’s craft included Heritage Surf & Sport, Wave Jammer, Farias Surf & Sport, and Inlet-Outlet. •Speaking of Inlet-Outlet, wedding bells rang loud for owner Mike Brown and his sweetheart Trish Dent, who were married in New Jersey in early April. Best wishes to them for a long and happy life together. In other matrimony affairs (ahem... we mean news), congratulations to Outer Banks pro Je sse Hines, who entered into the sacred bond of marriage with the love of his life, Whitney Everhart, on Saturday, June 2nd in Wilmington, NC. A melting pot of East Coast rippers, industry moguls, and legends attended the proceedings. Despite the dispansion of the hell-raising Pirates of yesteryear, the festivities helped bring the boys back together, and

all angels and heathens alike were able to temporarily drop their convictions to toast their bro with a debaucherated bachelor party at Masonboro Island and a post-wedding blitzkrieg on the town. Longtime childhood buddy Justin Fucci woke everyone Sunday morning, moments before his Bloody Mary fix, to say this about the weekend: “It was Team Shitpile meets the Christian Coalition. Wrightsville Beach (the steak-infested Red Dog’s in particular) didn’t have a chance against us. It was disgusting, just like old times.” Besides giving the boys an excuse to wreck shop, the wedding ceremony also provided an escape route for Justin’s brother, Martin “Mos Def” Fucci, who only nights before spent the wee hours of Prom Night running through Nags Head Woods from a certain feared, uniformed faction. Hey man, aren’t you a little old to be going to high school parties? In Virginia Beach blurbs, Randy Washburn just got picked up by Aleeda Wetsuits while Pete Collier, who placed 5th at this year’s Mid-Atlantic Regionals, is once again preparing for the US Championships in July, an event he placed 3rd in in ‘99. Pete just got the nod from Spy Sunglasses and Etnies, ad ding to his other sponsors Hotline Surfboards and Rip Curl Wetsuits, and he’ll now be able to crash Oceanside, CA, decked out in style. Virginia Beach ‘80s legend Jon Kleintop sent us an e-mail concerning his job repping for Billabong and how it’s contributed to a level of stress he’s never felt before. Kleiny did, however, get to escape for a short while to the Channel Islands on Gary Clisby’s boat (of Cortes Bank fame), emphasizing that the waves there “would give The Box or Shark Island a run for their money.”
Fisher Culbreth -- Struntz
Lucky for this working man, though, there were no broken bones or boards for him, just fat, juicy barrels. There are a few new sales reps that deserve mention in the Mid-Atlantic area. Justin Casey of Surfer’sEye.com is now repping for The Realm Sister Clothi ng, Nice Shoes for girls, and NSS for men while Fisher Culbreth will be taking care of Hot Buttered Eyewear (founded by Aussie pro legend Terry “The Sultan of Speed” Fitzgerald). Contact Justin at 609-425-8342, or Fisher at 910-458-6945 for more info on these fine products. On a final rep note, Maryland beauty and Chauncey’s Surf Shop employee Paige Regan is now the Mid-Atlantic sales rep for Toes on the Nose.In other news from the Maryland front, K-Coast Surf is reaping a very successful spring and summer so far with board-selling, and Dan Taylor Shapes, HICs, and Perfections are also doing very well. The big surprise, according to employees, is the overwhelming swarm of people buying up Rascoe Hunt’s Gale Force Glass shapes. Apparently, K-Coast sold out of all GFG’s less than two weeks after the first shipment. A huge word of thanks to Johnny D of Malibu’s Surf Shop out of Ocean City, MD, who gave us oodles of blurbs from his area. Former Malibu employees Chip Ayres and Ricky Barretto recently opene d up The Bamboo Bar on Worcester Street, a location formerly occupied by Duffy’s. According to Johnny D, it’s the new hot spot in town, and on Sunday nights, they hold a DJ party along with a Von Zipper giveaway. If you’re in the area, definitely stop by The Bamboo Bar, or call them for current happenings at 410-289-1115. Johnny D went on to tell us Fletcher Birch is learning the sales game from Redsand rep Kevin Hynson, while Malibu’s teamriders John Selway and Jess Baunhoffer joined Mike Trivitz on a trip to El Salvador. Finally, returning from an April trip to Indonesia where he caught smoking G-Land and Desert Point, Johnny D wanted to give a plug to his buddy Alan Cassell, who runs a 55-ft outrigger charter boat called The Indo Connection. The craft takes surfers to Lombok, Sumbawa, and beyond. •The Pit Surf Shop Bar & Grill, in Kill Devil Hills, NC, raised nearly $4000 for the American Cancer Society during a two-day benefit held in late April. The event drew more than a dozen bands and hundreds of partygoers. A special word of thanks goes out to Know From Nothing’s Ashley Taylor, who shaved his waist-length dreadlocks on stage and donated the mass to provide wigs for a patient’s program; Blissta’s B.C., who organized talent for the benefit; and Mike Talley, for designing and producing T-shirts. But the highlight of the weekend was when Steve Head, shaper for Ballistic Surfboards and frontman for the local band Samana, sang a heartfelt punk rock duet with his inspiring girlfriend Betsy, who is currently battling breast cancer. Steve continues to make big moves, and will have an in-house shaping bay open to the public in Dare County’s newest surf shop, Wave Shack Surf & Skate which owner Len Gaskill opened in early June. The shop satisfies an area previously devoid of surf product—the South Nags Head/ Manteo/ Wanchese elbow—and will carry lines from Counter Culture and Planet Earth, among others. The Wave Shack already has a surf team in the works with Jeremy Peters elected as captain. For more info, contact manager Mary Perkins at 252-449-2600. Len’s had a rough run of luck lately, getting burglarized by a former employee and friend for $1500. Luckily, he bounced back in time to purchase and open Wave Shack, along with two separate locations for The Stone Oven, a pizza restaurant that’s traditionally employed a number of the area’s top surfers over the years. The 2001 hurricane season officially kicked off June 1st, and four days later, Tropical Storm Allison roared to life in the Northwest Gulf of Mexico with maximum winds around 60-mph. As the system d eveloped, it

turned toward the west and quickly moved ashore near Galveston, Texas, but not before pumping in several days of soli dd surf from the Lone Star State all the way to the Panhandle of Florida. John Novicky, shop employee at Underground Surf Depot in Galveston, reported three days of swell with waves ranging from waist-high to overhead, while Neil Smith, who’s employed at Innerlight in Pensacola, FL, said that the city’s new pier reaped five days of waist to chest-high surf from the storm. Novicky also told   ESM that with the East Coast dead flat for weeks, New Smyrna surfer/ shapers Erie Peeples and Wayne Jones made the long drive over to the Panhandle and scored a much-needed respite from their early summer wave jones. •Also suffering in the grips of summertime flatness, Central Florida Gulf Coast surfer/ photog Micah Weaver reported that he’s kept his mojo movin’ with lots of skating at the Coquina Key Skatepark in St. Pete, FL. The 2-year-old facility, sponsored by local surf shop Florida Oceansports, just refurbished their ramps, adding new metal sheeting to all the riding surfaces as well as installing a new eight-foot quarter pipe donated by the recently-closed Badlands park in Orlando. Micah said the new additions work insane, and Coquina Key is swamped with skaters every weekend enjoying the updated course a nd its extremely reasonable three-dollar entry fee. In sad news from St. Pete, local Gulf Coast surfer Ross Kelley tragically passed away on June 1, 2001. The Upham Beach crew wishes to send out their condolences to the Kelley family and all his friends. Across the Gulf, Quiksilver held their first-ever Texas surf camps, stoking hundreds of local kids with two different clinics in Galveston and Corpus Christi. Camp organizer Matt Kechele brought over East Coast surfers Kenny Kozack and Todd Kline along with west coast riders Jeff Booth, Josh Hoyer, and Peter Mel to help with the instruction. With fun surf the whole time and an excellent response from the local communities, the Quiksilver team listed the Texas stop as one of th e most successful and plans future visits to the Lone Star State in coming years. Another tour that’s been making its way around the Right Coast this summer
Katie Coryell -- Blevins
is Rusty’s Where’s Wardo movie premiere. Rusty debuted the new surf flick, starring Cali aerialist Chris Ward, up-and-down our shores, and Glassygreen.com teamrider Katie Coryell in Folly Beach, SC, told ESM that the movie’s May stop in Charleston drew a crowd of about 60 people from all over the state. In addition to the video showing, Right Coast teamriders Matt Coleman, Jeff Hambrecht, Cane Faircloth, and Shon “Dirt” Lassiter joined Ward for a surf demo, but due to tiny conditions at The Washout, the boys decided to take the Rusty RV out for a night on the town instead. As a non-drinker, Katie was selected as designated driver for the group’s pub crawl, and she piloted the party-bus as they hit all of Charleston’s finest watering holes. By the end of the liquor-soaked evening, the crew found themselves unable to resist the bright lights and big boobs of local topless club S outhern Belle and decided to cap off the evening by checking out a few of Charleston’s best bac ksiders. Although Coryell declined to take part in the flesh fest, she said all the guys were totally overwhelmed by the Belle’s display of true southern hospitality. •In nearby Mt. told ESM that shop shaper Mike Bedenbaugh is now making boards for Ben Aipa, making East Coast Surf Company the only US distributor for the Hawaiian line. In addition to the Aipa models, the shop picked up a bun ch of new designs from Duke Boyd, Robert August, Corky Carroll, and Island Girl. Outside of the sticks, East Coast Surf Company also reps throughout the Ca rolinas and Virginia for Scott Sandals, Victory Wetsuits, X-Los, and Greg Noll. To learn more, call Marshall toll-free at 877-956-15 16. •In other rep news, Geoff Armstrong sent word that he moved from New Smyrna, FL, to Satellite Beach and will now be the new South Florida rep for Realm Clothing. In addition to the apparel, he’ll also be helping out Marketing/ Team Manager Todd Miller with promotions as well as working with Realm’s Florida-based teamriders. Geoff can be reached at 321-779-2289. •Also in South Florida, Ayal Lifshitz sent out congratulations to Wahine Blue owners Blackie and Nikki Cabral, who were married this spring in Miami. Their wedding took place in Coconut Grove with nearly two hundred guests, and f ollowing the ceremony, the couple headed off to honeymoon in Tahiti with fellow newlyweds Dutch and April Schorn of BC Surf. •Sunshine State shaper and Quiksilver East Coast Team Captain Matt Kechele wanted to congratulate North Florida teamrider Bradley Margol for his first place finish in the Boy’s division at the Freestyle/ AAU National Championships as well as new team member Eric Geiselman for his victory in the Explorer Menehune division at the NSSA Eastern Championships. •Times have been really tough for more t han a few u nlucky cyberspace professionals in the wake of the infamous dot-com layoffs, and one of ESM’s top contributors, Assig nment Writer Eric Seeger, lost his position as Associate Editor at the online fishing mag eAngler. Although Eric kept busy penning Eastern Surf’s music column and several interviews from his Gulf Coast home in Tampa, FL, the freelancer was forced to look for alternativeemployment during these lean times. Fully determined to bring home the bacon in one way or another, Eric earned extra cash moonlighting as a male stripper at several nearby boobie bars. Going by the stage name “The Love Muscle,” Eric quickly earned a reputation as one of the Bay area’s most sought-after beefcakes. But thankfully, the talented wordsmith was saved from exotic dancing’s smutty depths when he scored a pair of well-paying freelance gigs with photography magazines Shutterbug and E-Digital. Although Seeger allegedly put away his dancing shoes forever, we’ve heard rumors that ever y once in a while, The Love Muscle will don his skimpy leopard skin g- string and entertain Michelle with his polished rendition of the Full Monty. •In Indian Harbour Beach, FL, Brian Tudor at BAT Surfboards announced the hiring of Jupiter, FL, shaper Graham Preston to help with board designs in South Florida. Surfers in Jupiter can find Graham’s shapes at Ocean Magic and other local shops. BAT is also offering custom-only epoxy boards with blanks from Steve Forstall at Coda Cores. To learn more, call Tudor at 321-779-3996. •Chris Burch, Team Captain for McKevlin’s surf shop in Folly Beach, SC, sent a shout-out to teamrider and South Carolina’s Girl’s champion Holly Nettles for placing in three different divisions during the first annual Folly Beach Wahine Surf Classic. Holly ripped her way to fourth in Shortboard, fifth in Funshape Open, as well as third in Longboard, and she looks to do equally as well in this year’s East Coast Wahine Championships in Kure, NC, on August 11th-12th. Hanging with code-named teamriders Casper, Rip-Dog, and Bully, Terry’s expectations of “pretty good Hatteras,” based on what he’d witnessed through past ESA Easterns appearances, were blown to bits after he caught clean, 8-foot pits—the result, no doubt, of curling and imbibing several 12-oz Budbells the night before, a Mid-Atlantic tradition for making the swell come up. Glad you caught it brother, now go home. •Also around the Mid-Atlantic, Creatures of Leisure picked up North Carolina native Scott Perry to rep in Virginia, North Carolina, Sou th Carolina, and Georgia. Perry, both a pro surfer and shaper, just returned from a ten-year stint in Hawaii where he polished both his surfing and shaping before returning home to Point Harbor, NC. For those of you who like to wager, bets on whether Gordon actually makes it all the way are being taken right now on Sean O’Hare’s website 16streets.com. •Surfing-themed books are popping up all over the place these days, and one of the latest is Southern California surf journalist Chris Aherns’ collection of surf stories called Kelea’s Gift. Aherns, former Ed itor of Longboarder and regular contributor to The Surfer’s Journal, covered nearly 500 years of surfing from ancient Hawaii to modern-day California with Kelea’s Gift, which features 33 true tales of surfers and their adventures in places ranging from Baja to Saipan. To purchase the new book, or Chris’ two others, Joyrides and Good Things Love Water, e- mail Chubasco Publishing at chubasco @compuserve.com. •North Florida’s Ryan Vermey sent word that he’s opened a new surf shop in Neptune Beach, FL, called Secret Spot. Next time you’re in that neck of the woods, stop in and check out his store or call Ryan at 904-270-0526 to find out more. •Spyder Surfboards announced that Stuart, FL’s, D ave Leonard is now the new East Coast Team Manager. Call Dave at 561-393-2482 to get more info on Spyder’s latest shapes. •In Southern North Carolina, Chris “Gut” Rochelle’s band, The Needles, have b een blowing up the club scene in downtown Wilmington, NC, not to mention playing shows in Raleigh, Atlantic Beach, and Savannah, GA. If you’re in the New Hanover area, check ‘em out as they’ll most likely be playing at Bessie’s or The Firebelly, their home venue. Besides holding court as one of the top skaters at Hampstead’s Skate B arn, Gut raised a few corporate eyebrows while playing a gig at The Firebelly and will soon be seen strumming away in Martin Lawrence’s new flick, Black Knight. •Upstart sunglass company Von Zipper’s stylish designs and guerilla marketing attracted Billabong USA’s attention, and the corporation purchased the Cali eyewear enterprise this spring. With the Bong’s support, Von Zipper will be able to further expand into new product categories and markets while remaining an independent entity based out of San Clemente, CA. Crusty, who’s scored shots in Skim as well as Surfer, Surfing, and ESM officially came onboard part-time in our photo department after graduating this May from Melbourne’s Florida Tech with a degree in Ocean Engineering. While ESM’s position doesn’t offer the pay or prestige of engineering, Donald, who’ll be Photo Editor Dick Meseroll’s desk jockey, is sure to learn the finer points of phone-call screening, coffee-making, and back hair grooming while working under Mez’s tutalege.
