Volcom’s
new team manager, Florida’s Daniel Terry, sent ESM
an e-mail bragging about how great a time he had partying and surfing
around the Virginia/ North Carolina border in

mid-May. Hanging with
code-named teamriders Casper, Rip-Dog, and Bully,
Terry’s expectations of “pretty good Hatteras,” based on what he’d
witnessed through past ESA Easterns appearances, were blown to
bits after he caught
clean, 8-foot pits—the result, no doubt, of curling and imbibing several
12-oz Budbells the night before, a Mid-Atlantic tradition for making the
swell come up. Glad you caught it brother, now go home. •Also around the
Mid-Atlantic, Creatures of Leisure picked up North Carolina native
Scott Perry to rep in Virginia, North Carolina, Sou th
Carolina, and Georgia. Perry, both a pro surfer and shaper, just
returned from a ten-year stint in Hawaii where he polished both his surfing
and shaping before returning home to Point Harbor, NC. Scott joins
fellow Right Coast Creatures reps Mark Neustadter
in the Northeast
and Danny
Melhado in the Southeast. To speak with Perry, call 252-491-8744.

Augustine, FL, told
ESM that they’ve just hired John Lucas to take charge
of all shaping production. John will be shaping for Zion
while still making boards under his own label, Lucas Surfboards,
as well. •In more news
from the shaping bay, Chris White, shaper of Anti-Corps Surfboards,
announced that his line of sticks have hit Jensen Beach, FL, and will
be available at local surf shops this summer. Anti-Corps also announced
the a ddition
of new teamrider Kyle Cuatt of Stuart. To get in touch with Chris
at Anti-Corp call 561-334-5600 or e-mail xxstr8edgepnkxx@aol.com.
•North Carolina skater Christian Kane scored a starring role in
the locally made, West 3rd-sponsored skateboarding video,
What?!, edited and produced by Bernie McGrew.
Shortly after the vid’s
release, the KDH local picked up two new surfing sponsorships with
Xcel Wetsuits and Pride Surfboards. Be on the lookout for
Kane this summer, who’ll be taking his pop out on the lips and
ledges of the Mid-Atlantic and beyond. •Indialantic, FL’s, Shaggs Surf
and Sport as well as Melbourne-based Indo Board both wanted
to give props to teamrider Courtney Andren for placing third in
the NSSA Eastern Championships Women’s division. Outside of her
competitive triumphs, Courtney also recently picked up new sponsor
Aaron Chang. •Cocoa Beach, FL’s, Greg “Vargas” Gordon of crsurf.com
stopped by the ESM o ffice
this spring to let us know that he’s hitting the road this summer bound
for Costa Rica. Vargas will be taking the 9,000-mile trip via car,
stopping to surf and see friends in Virginia, New York, California, and
Mexico before
making the final descent into Central America. Greg plans on using
his extensive knowledge of the country gleaned

from working at his
crsurf.com which specializes in Costa Rican surfing, culture, and
accomodations. Once in the land of Pura Vida, he hopes to start a Costa-based
Surfrider affiliate, and find a nice pointbreak to call home. For
those of you who like to wager, bets on whether Gordon actually
makes it all the
way are being taken
right now on Sean O’Hare’s website 16streets.com. •Surfing-themed
books are popping up all over the place these days, and one of the latest
is Southern California surf journalist Chris Aherns’ collection
of surf stories called Kelea’s Gift. Aherns, former Ed
itor of Longboarder
and regular contributor to The Surfer’s Journal, covered nearly
500 years of surfing from ancient Hawaii to modern-day California with
Kelea’s Gift, which features 33 true tales of surfers and their
adventures in places ranging from Baja to Saipan. To purchase the new
book, or Chris’ two others, Joyrides and Good Things

•North Florida’s Ryan Vermey sent word that he’s opened a new surf
shop in Neptune Beach, FL, called Secret Spot. Next time you’re
in that neck of the woods, stop in and check out his store or call Ryan

in Raleigh, Atlantic Beach, and Savannah, GA. If you’re in the New Hanover
area, check
‘em out as they’ll most likely be playing at Bessie’s or The
Firebelly, their home venue. Besides holding court as one of
the top skaters at
Hampstead’s Skate B arn,
Gut raised a few corporate eyebrows while playing a gig at The
Firebelly and will soon be seen strumming away in Martin Lawrence’s
new flick, Black Knight. •Upstart sunglass company Von
Zipper’s stylish designs and guerilla marketing attracted Billabong
USA’s attention, and the corporation purchased the Cali
eyewear enterprise this spring. With the Bong’s support, Von
Zipper will be able to further expand into new product categories
and markets while remaining an independent
entity based out of
San Clemente, CA. Although headquarters are out west, the Von Zipper
East Coast squad is stacked full of Right Coast talent including Gabe
Kling, Jacob Kirschenbaum, and Sean Slater. To find
out more, call Paul Nade at 949-753-7222. •Next time you’re in
Costa Rica, drop by Florida pro John Logan’s new restaurant in
Playa Grande called Playa Grande Inn. The eatery will feature fine-dining
in addition to functioning as a real estate office for local properties.
Playa Grande Inn is set to open August 1st, so call Logan
or his partner Ed Newell at 800-373-6280 to make reservations.
•For all the skimboarders out there, there’s finally a publication just
for you. Laguna Beach, CA’s, Skim Magazine is a new, full-color,
glossy publication covering everything and anything skim-related. To get
your hands on a subscription, go to skimmag.com or call 949-494-9461.
•If you happen to pick up a copy of the aforemetioned Skim Magazine,
be on the lookout for ESM’s new Assistant Photo Editor Donald
“Crusty” Cresitello’s quality images. Crusty, who’s scored
shots in Skim as well as Surfer, Surfing, and ESM
officially came onboard part-time in our photo department after graduating
this May from Melbourne’s Florida Tech with a degree in Ocean Engineering.
While ESM’s position doesn’t offer the pay or prestige of
engineering, Donald, who’ll be Photo Editor Dick Meseroll’s
desk jockey, is sure to learn the finer points of phone-call screening,
coffee-making, and back hair grooming while working under Mez’s
tutalege. Also gaining employment with Eastern Surf this summer
is longtime Assignment Writer and boobie bar patron Matt Pruett
who will be taking over as Associate Editor and joining Senior Editor
Chris Towery in the editorial department, providing he can put
up with the eau de patchuoli and Grateful Dead music emanating
from Towery’s office. Compiled by Chris
