Heather Day and Dave Cropper -- Lamkin

•Narragansett, RI’s, Peter Pan was selected as a judge for the $10,000 Bic One-Design World Championship Final, scheduled to be held at Chicama, Peru, from March 16-30th. Pan will join such international Hall of Famers as Australia’s Nat Young, Hawaii’s Joey Cabell, and California’s Mike Doyle on the panel. For more info log on to www.bicsportsurfboards.com.

•Long Island, NY, globetrotter Bob Kuenzler recently got engaged to sweetheart Terri Schlosser. They plan to tie the knot sometime this year. In other matrimony matters, Dave Cropper, owner of Hampton, NH’s, Cinnamon Rainbows, and longtime coworker Heather Day are also officially engaged. Congrats to both lucky couples.

•Somewhere else over the Rainbow, Cropper and employee Phil Carey will hit Tavarua in April for Jeff Booth’s annual gathering of the Quiksilver tribe. Meanwhile, Sashi Lyford recently launched 5 Star Surfboards out of Exeter, NH. Lyford has been shaping for a few months and hopes to provide the local community with rippable sticks for affordable prices. Check ‘em at the aforementioned Cinnamon’s.

•In conjunction with Rhode Island Earth Day activities, the ESA South New England District and Rhode Island Surfrider Chapter will sponsor a clean up on April 19th, 2003, at Point Judith Lighthouse and Narragansett Town Beach. Special prizes go to those collecting the most trash; no prizes will be awarded to those talking the most trash... so Pan is definitely out.

•South African native-turned-New York based surf/art photographer and ESM contributor Grant “The Real Mr. J-Bay” Myrdal enjoyed some idyllic Hawaiian refuge from this particularly cruel northeast winter. But he’s not completely in from the cold yet—as sometime this spring Myrdal’s art will hit hip NYC galleries Belenky and Nexus. Check out his new website at www.snorus.com for gallery updates along with a hearty sampling of Grant’s stellar imagery. Myrdal also got the opportunity to pen a feature story for the February/ March issue of The Surfer’s Path. Besides Grant’s quality prose, the piece focuses mainly on the rigors and how-to’s of Hawaiian water photography, offering deep insight from aquanauts like ESM contributors Chris Van Lennep, Sean Davey, and Daren Crawford as well as Don King and Scott Aichner.

•Another Right Coaster seeking shelter from winter’s bitter tit, Wells, ME’s, Wheels-N-Waves co-owner Bob Morrell reported scoring killer conditions along the Costa Rican Pacific coast, from Tamarindo to Mal Pais, this January. Upon returning home in February, he found sloppy surf that was a little too conducive for ascending testes. But along with shop co-owner Vic Brazen, Morrell and the WNW crew are making the most of what’s around—hosting Tuesday night skate and movie sessions at the SPC Skate Park in Kennebunk. Keep up to date with the scene and the shop on their revamped website, www.wheelsnwaves.com.

•Maine chargers and admitted surf junkies Ben Nasse and Tim Ouillette also kept busy, launching www.thesurfjournal.com—a toothsome testament to Maine’s waves. Kudos to the boys for impressive work on their first three online issues. Give it a look, and ponder the endless possibilities of one of the last true U.S. surfing frontiers.

Peter "Buck" Gordiello -- Quinn

•Hull, MA, photog-turned-California transplant Jon Crotty hit a reeling, uncrowded session at a popular Mass pointbreak this fall with fellow Hullman Justin Lindholm before Crotty fled west to work on his acting skills. But LA casting calls are more crowded than the Malibu lineups, so he’s filling his bountiful spare time with Rincon sessions, claiming, “I’m not sure if I’m ever coming back East.” We’ll just see about that, Hasslehoff.

•The 35th Annual ESA New England Midwinter Surf Championships went down on March 5th at Narragansett Town Beach, RI. Top competitive surfers from Maine to Maryland ripped through the 38-degree peaks, with most of last year’s champs returning to defend their hard-earned, frosty titles. Teams from the University of Rhode Island, Bishop Hendricken High School, and Gansett Juice Surf Shop also came out to bang boards. This year’s contest introduced a new event, “Mini-Mal,” which entails riding planks between eight and nine feet. Special “Iceperson” trophies were awarded to top finishers. Big thanks to all who came out, as well as the following sponsors: the Rhode Island Recovery Corporation, the ESA, RI Surfrider Chapter, and the Town of Narragansett Parks and Recreation Department.

•Distracted from the blustery surf, Rhode Island photog Chris Parker informed us there was a Keith Richards sighting in the area... No wait, that’s just Water Bros owner and local charger Sid “The Package” Abruzzi singing his tats off with his band, Big World, at Oddballs in Middletown, RI, on December 28th, 2002. Parker bragged: “For a man in his fifties, Sid still knows how to rock-n-roll.” Move over, Mick!

NYC Surfrider Chapter founder Rob Bailey and the always-vocal New Jersey activist Dr. Bill Rosenblatt were recently appointed to the Surfrider National Board of Directors—joining fellow East Coasters Dr. Mike Orbach of North Carolina and Rhode Islander Kira Stillwell—making the Right Coast’s booming environmental voice even more robust.

•Artist extrordinaire Mike Montanaro of Newport, RI, launched a new website at www.montanarodesigns.com, featuring a tasty selection of Montanaro’s original artwork as well as heaps of Northeast surf photos. Give it the old click-a-roo to check out his many waveriding-inspired works.

•Like many Right Coasters, NYC freelance writer/photographer Aaron Mindel painted a bleak picture of this season’s ocean offerings up his way. Mindel professed that aside from the onslaught of polar offshores, his favorite breaks—Rockaway, Long Beach, and Montauk—have, in his words, “been flatter than a six-year-old ballerina.” Luckily, working frequently with one of The City’s latest skate conglomerates—Capicu Productions, ABC Skateshop, and Rock Star Bearings—he stayed pumped with a fresh skate video set to premiere in May. Go to www.capicuproductions.com for more info.

Magilla Schaus Chillin' -- Schaus

•In other New York deets, according to ESM Photographer Rich Quinn, some Strong Islanders did manage to score themselves a few Slurpie headaches in spite of the prevailing poor conditions. Quinn gave “hardcore” accolades to longtime aqua fria charger Peter “Buck” Gordiello along with Bruce Bailey and the Supercargoman posse, as they paddled out twice on a frigid January day—with water temperatures in the 30s and a howling northwest wind. How does Quinn know all this, you ask? He was there—snapping pics on the ice rink-like sand—without the comfort of six degrees of rubber. That ain’t exactly too softcore itself.

•Speaking of tough muthas, get well wishes go out to two chargers on the mend: Craig “Finz” Rogers of Dundas, Ontario, who broke his collarbone in a dirtbike accident; and John Newgard of Halifax, Nova Scotia, who suffered a sizable fin slash.

•Other freshwater waveriding mentions go to Scott Disztenberger and Bob “Aquadoc” Beaton. West Salem, OH’s, Disztenberger is working on a new video set to cover the Lake Erie region, tentatively titled Out of Place. Look for a review in a future issue of ESM. Meanwhile, Beaton was recently honored by Grand Haven, MI, as Historian of the Year for his research into the Great Lakes’ surfing culture.

•And to all the griping northeast surfers who think they’re bad off with freezing flatness and off-the-chart windswells, take the following into consideration: at least your ocean (or in this case, lake) isn’t frozen over. Milwaukee, WI, Great Lakes rider and photographer Ryan Bigelow reported to ESM that Lake Michigan has taken its annual freeze-over hiatus. Bigelow and local company Todd Phillingham, John Moser, and William Wall did, however, manage to score a clean, head-high day at one of their primo spots, Klodies, in early January that was “somewhat warm”: 32-degree air and 31-degree water. Warm’s obviously a relative term here. Lake Erie riders reported similar experiences, as ESM’s chief Great Lakes reporter Magilla Schaus of Buffalo, NY, along with Niagara Falls, Ontario’s, Chris Furminger and Crystal Beach, Ontario’s, Drew Pearson, snagged one last session on January 12th, before Old Man Winter slammed the door shut on surfers—who by this time had traded in their surfboards for iceskates and hockey pucks. –Compiled by Mike Fish

MA BLAHS

Wooly, Troy, Jeff, Bruce, Nick, Mike, Brad, and Tucker -- Veeco

•The Ocean and Monmouth County, NJ, surf communities were shocked and saddened by the loss of two well-known figures in January. Point Pleasant Beach’s Stephen Hatch, 52, passed away following a session at Cane Garden Bay, Tortola. A memorial paddle out was held on February 8th in Hatch’s honor at the now-infamous Jenks—a break he was one of the first to crack in the early ‘70s. Also passing at 52 was Gary Cimochowski, a two-decade member of the Brave New World clan. Known for his Basic Element Surfboards line—and, ironically, a longtime friend of Hatch’sGary leaves behind his wife Meg and their six children. A fund’s been established under The Estate of Gary J. Cimochowski. Donations can be sent to 740 Prospect Ave., Pine Beach, NJ 08741, account # 685-5567517, or wired to routing # 031201328. Our deepest condolences to all the friends and families of these dearly missed Jersey surfers.

•Manasquan, NJ, surfer Karl Becker’s wife Susie was forced to undergo labor at home on Christmas Eve 2002... in a bathtub. Thanks to Karl and a local policeman, the delivery went fine, and a brand-new Sally Eve Becker made a clean getaway from the womb (ha ha, urr... tough audience).

Reef’s Brad Beach reports that March 4th’s BTS Surf Expo Western Hoedown, held at Excess in Virginia Beach, VA, was a hog-wild success.

•Coming around the bend of one of the coldest, flattest, and utterly lamest winters in East Coast memory, Outer Bankers paid their share of fines for the endless run of epic swells the island copped this fall. Buxton, NC, received up to 14 inches of snow (!!!) in late January, blanketing residents inside for days. Meanwhile, town natives Evan Foster and Mikey Weeks took advantage of the sudden change of terrain, indulging in a novelty snowboarding session down Wright Brothers Memorial: “Watch that cactus... damn!”

•Rather than satisfy their boarding urges with a sandspur Icee, Dare County rippers Bradley Cockrill and Martin “Mos Deaf” Fucci flew south and west, respectively. Bradley relocated to Miami Beach, FL, to pursue an education and a springsuit while Martin bounced to San Diego, CA, for a sobering season of Blacks Beach grindage.

•Another thirsty Mid-Atlantican splitting the ice was Dewey Beach, DE,’s Aaron Powell, who just got styled by Electric and Xcel thanks to big pimpin’ rep Tony Lincoln. Aaron joined fellow Delaware boy Colin Herlihy on a Kauai surfari, but not before letting ESM in on some Dewey Beach haps. Dewey Beach Surf & Sport is under new ownership. Taking over Harry Wilson’s former position, Jerry Seiling moved the shop to its new Bellview Street location. Aaron himself plans on initiating water safety and training clinics this summer with friend Brian Cotter. For more info, log onto www.surfdewey.com.

Powell wasn’t the only guy getting his aloha on this January, as ESM Editor Matt Pruett paid a visit to longtime friend and Outer Banks’ North Shore ambassador, Brian Zongolowicz. With six years experience mingling with 50th State heavies, “BZ” safely guided our wordsmith through an epic sojourn around surfing’s Mecca. Sincerest thanks to BZ, his roommate Jason Webb, and the Ibarra family for their hospitality. Next Carolina kid on BZ’s buddysitting schedule: Billy Hume, who just signed with Electric and Red Bull.

•And with all this freakin’ talk about Hawaii... last ish’s coverbrutha (Vol. 11, #86) Frank Walsh wasted no time charging the first WQS contest of the ‘03 season, the one-star Sunset Beach Pro. In “perfect” six to ten-foot (datz Hawaiian kine, brah...) bowls, Frank powered to an equal-12th finish, halted only by eventual winner Shane Beschen. Attaboy, Frankie! Also on the program, fellow New Jersey pro Ryan Kimmel doesn’t really have a death wish. But we’re a little concerned since everyone’s still talking about a certain Backdoor beast Kimmel threw himself into this winter. Aww, does somebody need a hug?

Matt Pruett and Brian Zongolowicz -- Bullschtein

•While Walsh and Kimmel were getting their rocks off on The Rock, South Jersey snowbird Jason Reagan instead headed to Puerto Rico. A mistake? Not likely, as Regs claims it was “by far the best surf trip of my life.”

•In Virginia Beach news, anyone cruising the oceanfront will notice 17th Street Surf Shop is now a heaping pile of wood and scrap metal. No worries, the store’s just being reshaped into a 72,000 square-foot wave. Look for its grand reopening on May 1st.

•In other VB deets, don’t miss the Hotline/ Quiksilver Lord of the Jetty contest, scheduled for June 14th-15th at First Street Jetty. First prize wins a trip to Hawaii.

•Congratulations to Sweetwater Surf Shop nerd Pete Viele, who earned Dean’s List honors at UNC Wilmington before graduating with a B.A. in Journalism. Pete immediately put his degree to good use, penning several CD reviews for this issue’s Eargasm (page 70). Viele also served as Music Coordinator for Pat Stublen’s newest release, Destined For Second. See this issue’s Cinematheque (page 88) for more on that project.

•Beer isn’t as bad as it’s all cracked up to be.

•Out of Annapolis, MD, Stewart May of Chesapeake Light Craft, the world’s largest wooden boat manufacturer, told us about their new 16-foot paddleboard design, the San O’ 16, which has already been tested at several Pacific spots against big-name paddleboard companies. For more info, e-mail May at stewart@clcboats.com.

•In other Maryland blahs, mark your calendars for The 3rd Annual Ocean City, MD, Surfrider Foundation Longboard Challenge, scheduled for June 7th, 2003 at the Castle in the Sand Hotel on 37th Street and Coastal Highway. Surfrider’s Legends Party will commence at 6:30 pm following the contest. Do not miss out on one of the most anticipated weekends in Maryland’s stacked summer festivities.

•Be sure to check out ESM Photographer Joe Coffey’s new website, joecoffey.com, designed by fellow Garden Stater Ben Miller of Big House Design. The site features Coffey’s portfolio of scenic images, lifestyle shots, and of course, plenty of breathtaking skate, surf, snow, and motocross pics. Click on it now.

•December 7th turned out to be the best day of the year for Mindy Ballou-Fitzpatrick and her husband Matt Fitzpatrick, who were welcomed with a new baby girl, Ann Scott. The new addition to the family Fitz clocked in at seven lbs. and some change.

•From the Department of Corrections, we’re sorry to report a few blah-blunders slipping past our attention. First, big apologies to Hatteras gremmie Brett Barley, the actual surfer pulling into that crisp left barrel on page 46 of our Easterns coverage (Vol.11, #85), who was mislabeled Hunter Heverly. Second, on page 42 of the same story, Paul Poston, not Joe Gillen, grabbed third in Masters Longboard. Third, in last issue’s More From Everywhere Blahs (Vol.11, #86), Stone Tylyer was referred to as Hank Stezyl’s son. Stone’s real dad is none other than Chris Stezyl. And lastly, in that same issue Adam Holloway and TR Deveney’s new online store was mislabeled ewaterborne.com, instead of ewaterborn.com. Again, all apologies to those slighted. We promise the cough syrup problem is history.

•Both ESM’s “2002 Surfer of the Year” Dean Randazzo and Virginia Beach, VA, vert skater Robert “Pee Wee” Aglium just earned slots on Black Flys’ pro squad. If you’re daring to be a Fly family member, call Team Manager Bud Llamas at 949-646-3389.

•Wilmington, NC’s, Matt Gillen is now repping for S.O.D. Surfboards, and they recently acquired hot local Rob Brown. All inquiries can be directed at Matt by e-mailing onboardinnc@aol.com.

Volcom has officially declared a Grand Prize winner of their “Pick A Winner” contest: 17-year-old Virginia Beacher Jeff Hall and his brother Nick were flown to Veeco headquarters in Newport, CA, where they hung with Bruce Irons and company bigwigs, toured the facilities, and skated the six-foot mini-ramp. They were even treated to an Irons demonstration at 54th Street before scoring a $1000 shopping spree at the company warehouse, not to mention a Chart House dinner. And no, they weren’t forced to wear those funky, green foam fingers all day long. –Compiled by Matt Pruett

•Apologies to West Palm Beach, FL’s, Andrew Christopher, who tricked us into thinking he was Eric Strand on page 78 of last issue’s (Vol.11 #86) South Florida feature. It was Strand’s borrowed board that misled us.

•In that same issue, we brainfarted Glenn “Vader” Hawks’ phone number at Hawks Surf Glass. The correct number is 321-242-3335. Vader and BAT shaper Brian Tudor are teaming up with The Trinty Project/ AST, San Diego to introduce the new DHP resin system. Stick around.

Village Surf Shop had three things to tell us about Perfection Surfboards: 1) Regis Jupinko showed up in Garden City Beach, SC, to shape a day’s worth of boards for Perfection before returning to his Costa Rican homebase. 2) Village teamer and ESA North South Carolina District standout Aaron Sherengos is tearing it up on a longboard like no other grom before him. Look for great things from this one. 3) Mad props to Perfection teamrider Rob Hurt for winning the 40-44 age division at the 1st Annual Senior Surf Classic in Jaco, Costa Rica.

Justin Brown -- Yeti

Hurt wasn’t the only South Carolinian ending up on top after the three-day event. Quest Surfboards shaper Todd Youngblood placed first in the 30-34 division. Sundek rider Todd Brazell ran things in the 35-39 final, as did Rick Allen in the 45-49 bracket. And Surf City shopowner Mark Allison took 50+. Completing the Palmetto State sweep, Southport surf shop Sundek was the overall winning team. Killer job, boys!

•Also winning at the Senior Surf Classic was South Florida Longboard Association President Roray Kam, who recently added Island Fin Design and CRX to his sponsors.

After four years working as Billabong’s Team and Promotions Manager, the Melbourne, FL, native stepped down to pursue a career in real estate in the Laguna Beach area.
