We can’t say exactly what that goal is just yet, as Will asked us to be hush-hush concerning the matter, but let’s just say it’s likely you’ll be seeing these two chargers rushing the double-overhead++ realm in the near future.

Dylan Graves -- Dugan

•Running against the wind, Jay Lavigne—from Narragansett, RI’s, Warm Winds shop—stowed away his 6/4-mil and is now shaping out in San Diego, CA. Jay’s doing glasswork for Pacific Surfglass and no doubt cutting his share of gouges at Blacks, Swamis, and O-Side.

•On April 27th, a fuel barge was punctured in Buzzard’s Bay, MA, and spilled close to 15,000 gallons of oil into the delicate bay—which is home to many rare and endangered species. The spreading oil tarred area beaches and hundreds of seabirds. The Coalition for Buzzard’s Bay, in New Bedford, MA, is coordinating clean-up efforts. Anyone interested in volunteering or assisting the Coalition, please contact them via e-mail at haupert@savebuzzardsbay.org.

•Saturday, April 26th marks the start of the second year of beach clean-ups at Rockaway Beach, NY. Jimmy Gallagher of Point Lookout, NY, is really amped on the new Matt Kechele surfboard he won in a recent ESM Reader’s Survey Giveaway. Kechele used his cutting-edge “Kechnology” to shape Jimmy a first-class, custom stick. So watch out for Gallagher, who’ll be throwing more water than ever around the Long Beach jetties.

•Landowners in Nantucket, MA, recently proposed an action to install a device along the island’s southern coastline to reduce surf. The breakwater in question is designed to sap up to 90% of incoming wave energy. The Massachusetts Surfrider Chapter is combating the effort, but needs more volunteers. To get involved, send an e-mail to massachusetts@surfrider.org. C’mon folks, let’s save the waves we have.

The contest is limited to the first 100 entrants and all ESA members who compete receive 200 points. Chick Frodigh, MA-based chief organizer for the event, described the happening as follows: “No finals. No pressure. Just stoke.”

•If you’re heading to the small North Atlantic isle of Martha’s Vineyard, MA, for a weekend this summer (along with the rest of New England) check out the Martha’s Vineyard Coastal Observation website, http://mvcodata.whoi.edu/cgi-bin/mvco/mvco.cgi. Sure, the site’s a mouthful, but it’s worth every syllable. MVCO is a research observatory located at South Beach as well as in the ocean—a mile off the south shore of Martha’s Vineyard—and hooks you up with real time and archived readings on local swell, wind direction and speed, water temperature, currents, tides, salinity, and more. The only thing it can’t help you with is the abominable traffic getting there.

•With air and water temps thawing, the ESA’s Great Lakes District is charging into their summer contest season with a full docket of events. Stay updated on their website, www.lakesurf.com, or e-mail chapter chairman Rick Boss at rickboss_200@yahoo.com for up-to-date info on the schedule.

•And thanks to Great Lakes surf informant Magilla Schaus, the smooth sounds of Milwaukee, WI’s, The Nelsonics brought some extra Aloha spirit to the ESM office this spring. Ocean City, Maryland -- Chrisner

Longtime Monmouth County, NJ, surfer TR Deveney is spending a little less time on the peak at Manasquan Inlet since opening his 3rd Avenue Surf Shop in nearby Spring Lake on May 19th. Formerly known as The Board Room, 3rd Avenue Surf Shop is located—easy enough to remember—at 1206 3rd Avenue, catty corner to Spring Lake Town Square and next door to the infamous Allen’s Butcher Block. Look for the store’s official grand opening on June 26th, which just happens to be TR’s 36th birthday. Call the shop at 732-449-1866 or drop by for all your surfing needs and grab a porterhouse for the barbie while you’re at it.

•Topsail Island, NC’s, first annual Surfrider Foundation Surf Contest went off during spring break with a one-board design format. Epoxy vehicles were provided by NSP Surfboards and Onshore Surf Shop. With a three-foot swell filtering in, competition was tight throughout the event. Randy Howell placed first, PJ Watkins took second, Kyle Sumer nabbed third, and Josh Bradley squeaked in at fourth.

•Ocean City, MD, correspondent Art Baltrotsky wishes to congratulate all ESA Maryland District members for their inspiring performances at this year’s Regionals. The district’s bodyboarders ran the table with Paul Loukas taking first in Men’s Bodyboard—following in the tradition of local legends-turned ESA champs-turned pro riders Jay Reale and Brian Stoehr. Meanwhile, Taylor Ballard took top honors in Menehune Bodyboard.

•On a sadder Delmarva note, 25-year-old David Reynolds from Rehobeth Beach, DE, drowned on April 20th while surfing alone at 11th Street in Ocean City, MD. Several other surfers, some of them Ocean City Beach Patrol, found him floating unconscious in the 44-degree water. They pulled him to shore and attempted CPR but couldn’t revive him. Reynolds was known as an experienced surfer, so what led to his drowning remains a mystery. ESM sends our deepest condolences to his friends and family.

•In Crystal Coast news, Morehead City, NC’s, Charles Kemp makes sculptures of fish out of surfboard blanks called Fishy Sticks. For more about his art, call him at 252-240-3533, or e-mail charleskemp@starfishnet.com

•Virginia Beach, VA’s, Jason Borte will lead, along with Matt Kechele, Quiksilver and Roxy’s 2003 surf camps this summer. The camps stress ocean awareness, beginner and advanced surfing technique, and water safety. For more, e-mail alessio.smith@quiksilver.com. Speaking of Borte, he and the 17th Street Surf Shop team won the O’Neill Surf Shop Challenge, held in Kitty Hawk, NC, on May 17th-18th.

•In other Old Dominion deets, ex-VBers Donaldson Miele and Andrew Meyer of Darkhorse Media in San Clemente, CA, are proud to announce the addition of Brandon “Chunk” Haines to the Omega Media Distribution/ Darkhorse team. Chunk will be doing marketing and East Coast sales for the video production and distribution company. His first mission: to get the word out about the new video Rise Above, which Chunk will premiere this summer during an East Coast tour. Donaldson co-directed Rise Above with Ryan Ray and employed fellow VB rippers Drew Todd (Production Designer) and Chris Culpen (Music Coordinator) to keep it in the family. As an added bonus, another Vah Beacher—former ESM Editor and current Surfing Magazine Senior Editor Matt Walker—offers introspective voice-over narration. Look for a review of Rise Above in a future installment of ESM’s Peepshow.

•Manasquan, NJ, native turned Kill Devil Hills, NC, website designer Ben Miller, one of last issue’s featured surf artists, was recently selected to contribute to the Surf Style Art Exhibit, an eight-week look at retroprogressive art, culture, and artifacts beginning July 10th at the Minna Street Gallery in San Francisco, CA. Miller’s work will be displayed alongside such industry icons as Glen Friedman, Andrew Kidman, David Carson, Taylor Steele, Kevin Naughton, Craig Peterson, and Jim Banks. Heavy company indeed. And just when things were going really good for Ben... they got even better. Apparently once the SIMA folks saw last issue’s Surf Art feature, they decided to use some of his work on this year’s SIMA/ Waterman’s Ball calendar! Overshadowing his artistic creations, though, is the fact that Ben and his wife Emily are expecting a son in late September. Meanwhile, Ben’s brother-in-law Stan Archer became betrothed to his beloved fiancee Trisha Roberson on June 14th in Asheville, NC. Congratulations to the entire Archer/ Miller family.

•We keep hearing about the Quiksilver Tour Bus this, the Quik Tour bus that, blah, blah... But nobody gives any credit to the driver and all the crazy shit he has to put up with hanging out with the likes of Todd Kline and Adam Wickwire while trying to drive the friggin’ monster. Next time you get on or off the bus, give one of ESM’s favorite staff photogs, Moses “MoDaddy” Sanford, a little love for a big job well done, because he definitely deserves it. Go MoDaddy—the Ralph Kramden of surf tour bus drivers!

Don Tarrant checked in from Belmar, NJ, to drop some Eastern Lines gossip: Longtime Belmarian Barry Wann returned to Jersey from his new home in Germany and claims to have become an avid river surfer. Another DT tidbit found shop staffer and teamrider Bridget Moore getting picked up by Sticky Bumps. Her photo and bio will appear on 10,000 bars of wax this summer. And finally, summertime surf lessons are currently in session, with a free clinic for boys and girls 13 & under. Sign-ups are first come, first serve at the store.

•Hey you, stand up! After a year of moping through a debilitating knee injury, Emerald Isle, NC’s, Dylan Stone is back... well, not quite yet. But the Action Surfboards rider maintains that he has health insurance now and will soon receive some final rehabilitative treatments. OK, sit back down.

Whalebone teamrider Mike Schirmer reported seeing fellow Vah Beacher Cam Powell’s face emblazoned on a poster in a local shopping mall recently, and the very next day, he watched girls lining up to get Cam’s autograph at a Quiksilver promo. The Sperminator wondered what all the hoopla was about until he opened a magazine and saw the kid posing in a Pac Sun ad. When asked what Mike himself was up to while Powell was scoring with groupies, he sighed, “Nuthin’... just taking care of Joe Crimo. My dad let him sleep over one night when he couldn’t find a place to stay and he hasn’t left since.” Well, you know how it goes: Some of us are models and some of us are motels.

Ben Bourgeois -- Struntz

•Representatives for boardsport retailers from across the U.S., Hawaii, and Puerto Rico concluded their first annual strategic planning session May 10th-11th in Sonoma, CA. The group formalized the Board Retailers Association by electing its initial advisory board. Surf City Surf Shop (out of Wrightsville Beach, NC) owner Roy Turner, who serves as the body’s president, explained that the association’s purpose is “to give independent boardsport retailers a united voice to communicate with their manufacturers, tradeshows, and the media.” For more information, contact Roy at 910-509-7475 ext.112, or e-mail info@boardretailers.org.

•From the department of corrections, we biffed last issue when we referred to ESM Senior Photographer DJ Struntz as a rep for Hot Buttered Eyewear and Aaron Chang Clothing. So here it is: Struntz is the East Coast Team Manager for Aaron Chang and the National Team Manager for Hot Buttered. Big apologies to Mid-Atlantic reps Joe and Brian Sherridan for the blunder.

•Kudos to WQS warrior Ben Bourgeois for placing equal-seventh at the Foster’s Cup, held at Lower Trestles in April. Additional props go out to former Myrtle Beach, SC, threat Mike Hoisington, who placed equal-ninth in the comp.

•Anyone know a Brooke Horsheutz from Pungo, VA? Well, neither did we, but apparently she caught the heart of and landed aerial extremist Jeff Myers, and the two lovebirds eloped as soon as Myers returned from a recent trip to Australia. They plan on having an official ceremony for friends and family in Wilmington, NC, on May 7th, 2004. And to top off Jeff’s fortune, the guy just signed a two-and-a-half year mega contract with O’Neill wetsuits and clothing, and a two-year deal with Legend Eyewear. Congratulations, Jeff, and we’ll see you and your lovely wife in about 11 months. Mez’s getting the ESM camper van stocked with all the necessary beverages as we speak. -Compiled by Mike Fish

Damien Share -- Fish Stick

During a string of shark attacks biting Brevard County beaches in early April, Melbourne Beach, FL, surf artist/ ripper Damien Share was assaulted while surfing a dusk session at 3rd Avenue. Share suffered a sizable chomp to his forearm, but was stitched up quickly by ER wizards at the Holmes Regional Medical Center. Damien remained cool throughout the entire episode, and a few days later, Share’s buddies adorned his truck with this shark hood ornament, which he displayed with style. If you can’t bite ‘em, join ‘em.

•Just a few days after Share’s attack, fellow Mello Beacher Ralph Sammis was tagged while surfing in southern Brevard County, four miles north of Sebastian Inlet. Upon seeing a strange swirling movement in the water, Sammis reported feeling a “white-hot flash,” and didn’t realize he was bitten until reaching down to find a gaping leg wound. As a result, Ralph braved two surgeries, received 70 stitches, and will rehab the injury over the summer. He passed along the following advice: “Don’t surf by yourself in shark season.” On a more positive note, Ralph’s boardshort company, Private Label Systems, will relaunch this fall. For more about Private Label Systems, call 321-725-1334.

•Stuart, FL’s, Surf Central shopowner Doug Pippins reported a superb turnout for the First Annual Surf Central Surf Fest on March 15th, with approximately 85 contestants and around 350 spectators showing up. Pippins wants to send special thanks out to Ron with FCS Fin Systems and his wife Wendy, Local Motion shaper Ricky Carroll, announcer Greg Taylor, and everyone else who pitched in to make the festivities run smoothly.

•There goes my hero... At least that’s what onlookers said when New Smyrna, FL’s, Justin Anderson rescued two swimmers from a riptide in Vero Beach, FL, on Easter Sunday. The 19-year-old and his dad, Kevin, snuck away from the family egghunts for a few evening waves when Justin found two people struggling to stay afloat after being sucked out through the shorebreak. Justin calmly paddled over, waited for a lull in the sets, and pulled them in. Mad props to the brave lad for his valiant efforts.

Surfection Outfitters has a new location three blocks north of the Wabasso Causeway (SR 510) on U.S. Highway 1. Surfection’s new spot houses their usual epic deals on over 30 boards and heaps of other travel accessories. Make it your last stop before the Inlet.

LJ Brice, Or Is It? -- Martin

•Charleston, SC’s, Thornton White and son Colin spent their spring break on the North Shore. Besides catching reeling, uncrowded Rocky Point, they met up with surf historian/ ex-Long Islander Mark Fragale, current owner of Haleiwa Surf n’ Sea, Joe Green, and former Charlestonians Kyle and Beau Flemister, for a few sessions and a lesson in surf history.

•Go left young man... Folly Beach, SC, native Tom Nuener relocated to Pavones, Costa Rica, and has been holding down the point for about three years. Nuener proudly represents his Americ an sponsors Black Flys Eyewear, Planet Earth Clothing, and Vestal Watches. If you’re down there, you’ll probably see the blonde gringo attacking the epic lefthanders, riding his KX-250, and swilling it down at the local cantina.

•Big congrats to West Palm, FL, pro Peter Mendia and his wife Ali on the May 18th birth of their son, Egan Earl Mendia, at Saint Mary’s Hospital. Egan Earl measured in at 7 pounds, 20 inches long—and we’ll definitely look for some of Dadda’s trademark roundhouses from this mini-grom in the future.

•We’d like to apologize for a photo mix-up in last issue’s ESM Who Da Guy featuring Jupiter, FL’s, LJ Brice. After much confusion from all directions, Brice was harder to identify in a stack of slides than freakin’ Waldo at the circus. The action photo we ran was actually of LJ’s buddy Eric Strand—who just happened to be WEARING LJ’S WETSUIT and RIDING LJ’s BOARD on that day. Geez, how could we have ever been confused?

•Ho-ho-ho-daddy! Christmas came early this year for ESM employees, and a thousand thanks go to DVS Team Manager Brandy Faber, who hooked us up with brand-new kicks one sunny April day. Only a few hours later, Volcom Eastside Team and Promotions Manager and ESM’s very own Kris Kringle Daniel Terry rode into the office on his sleigh and, once again, flowed the staff heaps of killer duds. Next time, let us know you’re coming and we’ll break out the milk and cookies for ya! •Got your head in the oven because you’re ashamed of your inability to bust airs? Well, raise your head up high (wait, take it out of the oven first... ouch!) and get yourself airborne with the Surf Air Strap, “the only single suction cup surf strap!” It’s a two-inch cup with 15 to 20 lbs. of suction that goes around your front foot. It sticks, yet still pivots and slides, easily on a thin coat of wax. The idea is to give a surfer a little extra pull when hitting a section, while providing a little more midair stability. •And now for number-three on our Top Ten List of “Signs The Apocalypse Is Upon Us...” Regardless of how you feel about the ongoing big-business exploitation of our great sport, you should still try to catch an episode or two of MTV’s new reality television series, MTV Surf Girls, where a group of girls from around the country travel the world in hopes of attaining sponsorship from Roxy and a wildcard slot into an ASP event. Naturally, a few East Coast chicks made the cut—including Floridian contest rats Heidi Drazich, April Grover, and Molli Miller—so if you want to follow their hopeful paths to stardom, or if you’re just up for a good laugh (trust us, there are plenty), turn to the channel that, believe it or not, used to be known for its music videos, not reality shows.

A Wet Wooly with Troy Eckert (L) and Jason Steris (R) -- Dugan

Ian Tussing, partner and cofounder of Internet surf accessories company Bintu Limited, met his queenie wahine, Heather Coule, almost a year ago at an Island Water Sports Surf Camp in Cocoa Beach, FL. Since then the two have become very fond of each other; so fond, in fact, Ian proposed to Heather on April 12th, and the two will tie the knot in late November. Best wishes to both of them.

Jon Huberman, president of Floatsuit International, the floating wetsuits designed for children, would like to announce the company’s East Coast sales representatives. Felix Elwin will handle Puerto Rico accounts, Eric Pearson will head up the Southeast, Kevin Jordan will rep the Mid-Atlantic states, and Greg “Grog” Mesanko will take care of Northeast sales. Visit their website at www.floatsuitinternational.com.

•Big thanks to Thad Craston for providing us with some much-needed blahs from the New Smyrna Beach area. Evrec artist Indium showed up at Chases on the Beach on Friday, May 16th to play a live poolside show. The all-ages, no cover-charge jam, along with free food and drink specials were all part of a premiere of the new video Snapt, presented by Wooster Surfboards and Red Dog. The vid was put together by Logan Dulien and Chad Towersy, and you can look for an ESM review of Snapt in a future installment of Peepshow.

•And last, but certainly not least (hell, if anything it’s just the opposite) a heartfelt “you da man” goes out to Volcom owner Richard “Wooly” Woolcott and the entire Veeco family, who cleaned up three of the five Image Awards at the sixth annual SIMA Surf Summit, held in Cabo San Lucas from May 15th-18th. This was the first year such awards were given out, designed to identify the most influential companies and individuals and recognize them for their efforts to support and grow the surf industry each year. Making the point that it was a total team effort, a very humble and disbelieving Wooly won “Industry Achiever of the Year” while Volcom took both the “Print Ad Campaign of the Year” and “Manufacturer of the Year”—a very big deal indeed, as the entire place instantly erupted and showered Wooly with potables of every kind. Congratulations, Mr. Woolcott and everyone at Volcom for the well-deserved reco.

•An interesting Right Coast sidenote to the SIMA Surf Summit, and showing that the left coast knows where the beef in their tacos comes from: three East Coast shops—Quiet Flight, 17th Street Surf Shop, and Surf City Surf Shop—were nominated for “Retailer of the Year,” along with SoCal giant Jack’s Surf Shop and Local Motion’s Honolulu store—with the Orange County-based Jack’s taking the award. A real shocker, that one.–Compiled by Matt Pruett
