surfers, get ready to be put to the test — the Christian Surfing
Federation of Ocean City and ERGO will present their 5th Annual Golden Glove Winter Surf
Contest at 1st Street Beach in Ocean City, NJ, on February 27th. This year’s
event features an increased prize purse, with a $1000 spread going to
the top three finalists in Open Shortboard while 21-13 Surfboards kicks down a
free custom board to the winner of the Junior Men’s (15-17) division. In
addition, the Men’s division (18 & Up) and Groms division (14 & Under)
winners will each win $100, with the other finalists receiving money and/or
product from a variety of sponsors.
“The Golden Glove is held
in the middle of winter each year to see who can outsurf and outlast the winter
elements,” said Contest Director Denis Weiler. Garden State apparel company
ERGO has signed on as presenting sponsor of the event, and will give away free
ERGO tees to every competitor, with Gatorade also supplying thirst-quenching
drinks during the contest and awards ceremony. Also, Weiler said heated tents would
be on the beach to keep competitors warm in between heats. “An awards ceremony
will follow the Golden Glove nearby the event, with all ages and family and
friends welcome to attend,” Weiler said. “We’ll have a hot dinner there, live
music, lots of prizes from our sponsors, and surf videos on the big screen!”
Past winners of the Golden
Glove include Jersey staples Mikey Ciaramella and Rob Kelly, but last year,
Ocean City, MD’s, Vince Boulanger came up to the other Ocean City and claimed a
win. “I’m excited to compete in the Golden Glove again this year — it’s a
great time and you really get your money’s worth between the prizes and
dinner,” Boulanger said. But OCNJ kingpin Kelly is out to claim a hometown
victory again in 2010. “I look forward to the Golden Glove each year,” Kelly
said. “There always seems to be waves, and the event is super fun!”

The entry fee is $25 per division if pre-registered, and $30 the day of the
