The 2024 Pacifico Belmar Pro is officially less than a month away, and the tropics are heating up and looking promising!  It’s hard to get an accurate read for swell 3+ weeks away, but the way things heated up in the Atlantic for the past and coming weeks, the “hopium” levels are intensifying.

Last year’s event saw the closest call to a “cancel” due to lack of significant swell in the event’s history. However, by the grace of the surf Gods, (and Don Tarrant’s luck) we somehow squeezed out the threshold of rideability to complete the event.

Last year, a new face to the Belmar Pro, Costa Rica’s Alberto Muñoz Herrera edged out Tucker Collins for the FINS Mens Open win, while the winningest shortboard competitor in Belmar Pro history (aside from Tony Silvagni dominating the longboard division), South Jersey’s Cassidy McClain took yet another win over former champ and local hero Jessica Kwiecinski for the Playa Bowl Women’s title.

Longboard division dominator,  Tony Silvagni is always a crowd favorite to watch. And to win. The guy is nearly unbeatable every time ho dons a Belmar Pro singlet and paddles out into a heat. Photo: Bobby Siliato @robertsilliato

Other notables looking for repeats include Creatures Masters winner Josh Nicastro from New Smyrna, FL, Ty Roach and Jake Matteo in the Pacifico Longboard Open, Gary Finnegan Sr. and Puerto Rico’s Robert Ferrer in the Legends Longboard, and a possible rematch between Pat Emery and former winner Jack Murphy for the Sr. Men title.

The event runs from Friday through Sunday, September 6-8th and there will be after party events locally on Friday and Saturday nights after competition hours end. – Mark Sisom –
